As for silver ,Jon stocks auto air aluminium base, think that will be what you want.
Hi Andy.

I was probably the only person using paint from rattle cans (spraying the paint into the airbrush cup) so I guess it's hard to compare.

Id say those initial coats with the solvent are better - and obviously I didnt need to thin them, but after that water based win hands down. The way the paint layers and build up is a much smoother finish, also jons white seems to be very solid and after a few good coats even darker colours behind don't show through. As I use vinyl masks mainly, I work with most of the shell unmasked to start with - to that end I have to paint light colours first, which is the opposite to what you'd do with liquid mask. Also I don't have the luxury of most of the shell being covered until its unmasked for painting, so I have to be careful.

Bottom line is - I won't be going back to cans.
Anyone want a shed load of rattle can paints ?

A few slightly better pictures of some of the shells.

My cab forward 210 was my first water based paint shell - the fades on this are not good, and in general it didn't go well - this is when I was swearing a lot at the paints and learning how to use them. I even had to phone one of my painting pals to ask what the hell was going on !

I'm good now though

For the few people that are waiting - your shells are almost done

Jon sent me some of his and they are lovely.
He sent me a red which sprays - lays well nice - definatley get some more of his paints when they are ready.

First few coats are critical - very light and hair dryer until the paink keys to the shell.

Is there an opaque createx or similar silver available ?

auto air aluminium base is the bo++cks andy

I've finally cleared my backlog !!!

Here's a piccy of the last trio I painted.

One for Alan Lovell - he wanted this to be very easy to see and BRIGHT ! It's an FTW shell for a B4, bit of a weird shape to say the least.

And lastly, the ever so patient Jack Hirst and a V3 shell. I love these shells, such an ace shape and a joy to paint. Main design done using liquid mask and the details / window masks cut with vinyl. The iridescent paints are bloody lovely and change as the light hits them.
These water based paints are the future - loving them

What are you backing the Iridecents with?

White give a vibrant colour, Silver or ally base give a "Anodized" effect.
But my fav my a country mile is black!

It give you an almost mirror finish. It looks crazy!

Hi mate.

I've only backed with white so far, as the pearls / iridescent paints are kind of translucent, I thought black would be too much ! Will give it a go on the next one.

How thick / many coats are you putting on of the stuff like pearl / fluro / irri ?

Cheers.
Andy

To be fair, It depends on the colour.

Something like the Pearl Blue & Purple, I do 2 coats + 2 Backing coats.
the lighter colours I do 3, The pearls are great for shadows & fades.

The Fluro's I normally do 4-5 coats, with 2 white backing coats. That really makes them POP! (Yellow normally needs and extra coat.)

I always do light coats & dry them of between coats with a heat gun (Low temp)

the Irri's very similar to the pearl.
Although I tend to back them in black, I really do like the finish.
the colour change in the light its really good!

This shell has the Irri Purple at the back, Backed in black. You can see the colour change in the shadows.
They look good with the fluro's too, Good contrast.

Cheers Mike / Andy.

Painting inside sure beats what I was doing before

I've really enjoyed doing these, the Green and Pink one for Bob is my fav of the recent batch.

I know Andy likes the designs that 'wrap around the shell' and the 210 one was a 'good-un' done the old skool way with liquid mask and a blade. Best bet is to use liquid mask and vinyl if I can, that's what I did with Jacks shell and it does look nice - based on his usual design - but better

Yep - a mix of vinyl and LM is best, imho of course.

My shells for Kirky are my example of that dearly held opinion.

let me know what your lidl plastikote is like !!

That looks cool Andy but why when you've already got it drawn on the computer are you not just cutting it all in vinyl mask ?

Hi Ian.

It's for a Yokomo Bmax and the shell has a few crazy lumps and bumps, so I figured I'd try doing it in liquid mask. One I got half way through I wished I'd used vinyl !

It's done - but it's not perfect - and I like perfect

Will post piccies of the 3 I did today when I've platikoted them
