fiesta tdci engine cuts out
My daughters fiesta 1.4 tdci has started what she describes as losing power for a few seconds as if the engine cuts off. Its a 56 plate with 26000miles fully serviced but due one now. She,s done 9000 miles since she bought it in september mainly motorway driving 500 miles a week then local stuff. I drove it a few days ago and it seemed perfect.
I,ve booked it in for a service and diagnostic check but does anyone have any idea what it may be before I get told a b c from the dealer £££

we have problems with glow plug relays, though normally puts on a light, and yup before the arm chair mechanics come on, it does make em loose power.....
also have problems with air ingress on leak off pipes, which reguires a new engine pipe "loom" though that normally causes poor start after being stood, only other thing is fuel rail pressure sensor connector plug can get a poor conection and on acceleration it dies just like somone turns off the key then turns it back on. let me know what they find im a master tech at a ford dealer and been on fords for near 20 years so can look into thierdiag for you see if its feasable

Thanks for that but its going to a local garage. A lad I raced with did work experience at our ford garage and he said they ragged the crap out of cars on test drives and sometimes just cleaned up parts instead of replacing them so it put me off them years ago.
I,ll post results after service.

Do these suffer from sticky turbo vanes ? as it sounds like if it were a vag its going into limp mode due to overboosting ? Just hasnt done a lot of miles which is usually the killer on tdi engines as it soots up the turbo |

Driving behind it there no smoke belching out and the time I've driven it it feels really smooth. It did only 2k per year for the first 2 years then 11k from 09 till sept 11 and she,s done 8k in 5 months. last owner got ill so it was'nt used much before we had it. We live 1 mile from the mway so its at 65-70mph most of the time so should'nt that have burnt off any residues.

I seam to remember when i worked for ford as a mechanic, EGR valves used to go on the fiesta tdci's and that caused them to be down on power

my experience thay dont cause a sudden loss of power then normal again, and a ticking egr is sensed by the pcm and flags mil as its emission related.

She just got home after a 16hr shift and now tells me the engine does actually cut off not just lose power. She has to turn the key while its going to get it going again.
Its in garage this morning so I will post what the problem is later in case anyone else gets the same thing.

any warning lamps?
sounds like its going into los or limp home. key of/on resets that till next time. could be boost pressure, split pipe, any odd noises when it first looses power?

I drove it to the garage this morning and had no problems with it. It started fine accelerated fine and drove smoothly with no noises. She told me she sometimes has to turn the key on and off while its moving and other times it just restarts itself. Just waiting to hear from them now expecting a call soon.

As above its a motorway cruser so should be clear.

Seems it was just a simple blockage in the fuel filter. All the above recomendations checked, no faults found on diagnostics check. Just a bit too much crap in the filter. Will find out later if its cured or still sick. It was getting 65mpg before so was pretty healthy.
Thanks for all help.

you would be suprised how many motor way "cuisers" we get in that have not been driven hard, a cruise at low rpm is as bad as a tootle round town!

we have also seen mauny running concerns with supermarket fuel, fors will run on up to 11% (i think) bio fuel, but to eliminate wh have to advise customers to run on shell or bp for a couple of tanks, many concerns have then been eliminated. the lower quality fuel just means the modern diesel adjusts its self to prevent problems, but can run poorly

i know my tuned vag pd tdi, runs so much better on bp ulitimate, less smoke an more mpg.
I have a friend who works for delphi deisel an confirms from all the testing theve done the bp ultimate is the best with highest calorific value |
