Hi guys i am in need of some help please

I have been looking EVERYWERE for someone who can make a decal skin sheet for my SPEKTRUM DX3R PRO radio?

I found one guy who charged £45.00 bloody rip off lol

They have to have the equipment to do it in the first place which I dare say isn't cheap.

On top of that they have to keep stock of all supplies they'll use, so that's the vinyl it's printed onto, plus the inks they'll use to print it and looking at the stuff that's been done it won't be your average 4 colour set ( CMYK ).

But above all else you're paying them for the fact they have the skill and know how to be able to make graphics that will wrap around your transmitter and make you look cooler than you would otherwise.

If it was easy everyone would be doing it wouldn't they !

I agree with Ian. It isn't so much the material used/what it is but the time and skill invested into it along with as he said, the machinery to do it.
A pair of Nike cost around 70p to make but dayum...I couldn't do it. Haha
Same for most specialised areas...

NO !

You are getting a one off produced solely for you on specialist equipment that they have invested their time and money it, plus as I said they're not just sat there twiddling their thumbs for the phone to ring so you can place an order. They have to have stock of whatever they need to produce said bespoke decal for you as if they don't you'll go to someone else who does have the stock.

Then they stop what ever else they're doing just to print your decal / skin.

So lets see now, expensive equipment, knowledge of working said expensive equipment, everything in stock, a complete one off just for you and your model of transmitter, their time to produce said bespoke design, their time to pack carefully or apply the printed decal, their time to take your order to the post office plus the cost of postage.

So, lets say £5 to post it and the materials cost say £10, that leaves £30 for they're time, which leaves an hourly rate for their very specialist time of £15 per hour.

I've heard graphic designers working on daily rates of £600 per day, which is £75 per hour. Sign shops usually have a minimum charge too. So in the grand scheme of things with this broken down I think it's an absolute bargain.

However, if you can get the machinery, have the skill and can do skins for whatever you think is a reasonable price please carry on as I'm sure we'll all be buying them from you quicker than you can produce them.

Why do I rant at this, because everyone wants to look cool, but no one wants to pay for it, so why should all the people with the artist knowledge and expensive kit loose out just so you can look cool but then go, 'well it looks nice but it was a bit expensive'.

So next time you want something and someone says it will cost 'X', don't say it's too expensive because it's probably that price for a reason.

I have to agree with everyone here nasir 45 quid isnt expensive at all. And they are right it is a one off peice that they design solely for you in your colours. You have to take into account the time that goes into designing a skin etc and then the cost of materials equipment to actually print it. It;s cost me 100 quid for radio, wing, starterbox skins and i dont think thats bad at all as its in my colours and no one else will have it and its been designed bespoke for me.

I would have a think about the bigger picture before criticizing peoples prices.

You get this with spraying shells, people try to say, well it don't take that much paint.... so go buy the paint, air brush, liquid mask, hot air gun, compressor and talent and do it yourself...

Do you know when your design will be ready?

Map will be ready as soon as I can get my hands on a dx3r pro, I will try to find someone at Herts on Sunday then I can map the drop down as I think that is the only difference between the DX3R and the pro physically. I will have to double check that against my Radio. If it is different inother areas I will have to find someone willing to let me borrow the Radio, which hasnt been an issue so far with the other handsets we have mapped. So possibly next week all being well.

Nasir, out of interest I don't know what you do for a job, and I don't know if you're artistic.

If you have time, go into a sign shop with your radio / other gear and ask if they can do it ? I'm not sure if everywhere can do this, I think these graphics are coated / sealed behind a clear vinyl so they don't wear easily.

If you are artistic have a go at templating your radio accurately and then draw up what you want, take that to the sign shop and see if they can do it ?

I'm not having a pop at you directly here, most people don't know what goes into these things but always come out with a simple phrase that encompasses what you do - "just slap the stickers on this will you mate" and you can change that for whatever industry you're in. When I used to paint motorbikes it was "Can you just blow this panel over for me" which really meant can you remove all the grease and crud from the back of this panel and clean it, then take the decal off, flat and repair any stone chips, prime it and then match the colour spot on so it doesn't look out of place with the above panel that I haven't bought you, clear coat it, polish it and then re apply the manufacturer decals so it looks like new when I collect it from you, but I don't want to pay much money for it.

That's the same in every industry, people are in business to make money, if that's what it costs and you can't afford it that's because you don't have enough spare to buy it as opposed to their product / service being too expensive.

DCM has already said it about the shells. People love to look cool and it's all the shell painters and decal designers that make you lot look cool and have all your mates say how good your stuff looks, yet they're the unsung hero's, working until late to get that job that was brought in at the last minute done.

Educating the customer is always the hardest point, it is nice when they see our point of view though and realise that the best quality does cost a little bit more.

Yes its all done in house here, we do clothing, logo sheets, radio skins ipods, ipads, iphones, the list goes on! Also just done some shop signage which was a bit of a challenge! Some of the signs were over 6 foot long and it was windy as hell, not fun
