Its probably a LCD with backlight which manufacturers are selling as LCD. In my opinion, plasma is the way to go.

Try the panasonic G20 series, awesome

LED refers to the backlight only - not the screen. Now in theory it should give a crisper/cleaner image, but the main selling point as far as I can see is they can make them thinner.

Not worth spending extra on imho.

You've not spent enough then

Seriously though, it's all about the quality of the signal you put into them

Yes the signal makes a big difference, but so does the tv itself.

The signal is THE biggest difference, feed it shit it will display shit, it's a TV mot a magician!

The TV itself does make a difference I agree, a 42" Sony from Tesco for £250 is NOT the same as the 42" Sony for £500 from anywhere else, check the model number carefully

Don't like plasma's full stop. you need to sit much further away than the equivelent lcd/led to have a decent picture and with the size tv im looking at my room would'nt be any good with plasma!

The input will be SKY HD and a brand new aerial and cabling so that shouldn't be an issue.

think after spending much of the weekend looking round and getting some top advise from Best Buy its the sony 47ex703 for me!

how do you figure your room won't work with plasma? and don't plasma's have far better viewing angles than most LCD's?

if you are looking at a 47in lcd, then a 50in plasma should do the same job easy, and probably be cheaper than a 47 LED tv.

make sure you get one with local dimming though if you go lcd, as the edge lit ones can be a bit poor

Plasma have much better viewing angles than LCD/led.

Also, sky HD is only a 720 signal so decent tv's can show more imperfections in the signal. However watching a HD DVD will bring the tv to life

not at all jim,
if you had a 50'' plasma and 50'' lcd in a room you would need to sit further away watching the plasma to gain the better picture! thus making my room not big enough to have a 46-50'' plasma!

how do you work that out? same size tv, at same resolution, so you can sit the same distance away. And with a better viewing angle.
plasma also has no motion blur issues or rainbow effect. Something that only just about disappears on the very top expensive philips lcd models.
