Default do crystals (xtals) go off ???

hi all,

im currently trying to get back into the RC scene after many years away and have resurected an old 40mhz futaba set but no matter what gear i use nothing seems to work.... even borrowed speedos and recievers from other working cars but as soon as they get on my chassis....

nothing !!!

my question is in the title... ive tried 3 sets of crystals with the same result... but they are ALL 10year+ of age and havnt been used for 8 years

trying to justify all this to the wife and so a new set of equip is not realy on the cards

many thanx

tony

When I started racing many many moons ago, 30 years ago to be precise, people did talk about crystals going off, but as far as I know, the crystal itself simply contains the crystal and the resonant frequency circuit, in fact, the actual 'crystal' is probably the same quartz in every crystal and the oscilation circuit is different which defines the actual frequency. If that is the case, i find it hard to believe they could go off, though could be physically damaged or damaged by prolonged exposure to high strength magnets (the oscilation circuit that is)

But never let doubt or conjecture get in the way of buying new and shiny kit. You need 2.4ghz as you are less likely to get interference, or someone on your channel which could cause you to crash which could cost you twice as much as the cost of a brand new set.

i am using 40 meg crystals which are around 12 or 13 year old, and 27 meg ones over 25 years old with no problems. the crystals can be damaged quite easily by hard knocks but thats about all. have had problems with futaba 40 meg receivers in the past, if they were left for any length of time they either didnt work or became jittery. one of them needed to be left with power to it for a few hours then it worked fine, the jittery one became bin fodder as it didnt correct itself. they werre left for about a year, the one that just stops working still does so and wakes up again after treatment, still gets used in one of my more regular toys..
