Default Kyosho springs ...... we need to know!!

I have already had enough of not knowing what the rates of the Kyosho springs are ...................

What I am wondering is if people would be as kind as to lend me some springs so I can measure their rate on our specialist spring testers at work.

The idea is simple ..... people send me springs, I measure them and return them and produce a chart listing them compared to AE and Losi springs so we all know where we are.

Anybody up for helping me by sending some springs over PM me.

those arent spring rates those are just numbers.

this is the magic spring chart and it has actual rates. it seems to be missing the stiffer then silver front springs.

Mr X. That is the second time today that I have seen that chart .... thank you for posting it here!!!!

There are a couple of those ratings that I'd very much like to check out for myself as they are not quite in keeping with the "feel" of the springs. Hopefully we'll be able to fill in the gaps with my study!!

Jonathan, the numbers you give are the Kyosho identification numbers, not actual rates ...... all they really do is order the springs. They work as a guide to which spring in the Kyosho range to choose in relation to the one your currently using.

The chart Mr X has posted is in lb/inch rating so they can be compared with other manufactures springs.

Here is something (I didnt make it)
Piston conversions:
LOSI: AE: KYOSHO:

#54 = .055"
#55 = .052"----- #1 = .052"----- 2B = .051"
#56 = .0465"---- #2 = .0465"---- 2C = .047"
#57 = .043"----- #3 = .043" -----3A = .043"
#60 = .04"-----------------------3B = .039"

Just remember the "3" kyosho pistons have 3 holes not 2 ...... That means the damping effects will be different.

If I get some time I will do some calculations and post up the results .... but don't hold your breath!!

Alex ... thanks for posting that up but it is incorrect!!! Now if you swap over the "grams" and lb/" columns then maybe ... possibly. I would still prefer to measure all the different springs on the same equipment however.....

The real numbers are likely to be in the region of 3.x for the fronts and 1.x / 2.x for the rears all in lb/"

I have started measuring through all the manufactures springs and so far I can say that AE and Losi do a pretty good job of making their springs as described.

The Yokomo spring set has some very useful rates in it when compared to the Losi / AE spring sets for use on Kyosho cars as the fronts are a similar length to Kyosho springs (cutting the losi springs down to a similar length results in VERY high rates ..... put it this way a Losi Orange, cut down and reshaped to 45 mm goes from 2.8 to 3.5 lb/" approx)

I am struggling to get hold of Academy and most importantly Kyosho spring sets to measure.

Once I have some Kyosho springs measured I will post up my findings.

The problem with using Losi springs on Kyosho cars is the free lengths are so different. The Losi front springs are too long (about 5mm) which means that getting the front ride height low enough is a problem ...... the opposite is true of the rear (about 6.5mm too short).

To get around this in the short term I am using the plastic non threaded upper platforms and Losi lower platforms on the front (with clip in spacers I have in my box from something) and 5mm spacers made by trimming old Losi screw fasterned (non threaded) upper platforms between the spring and the threaded upper seat. Both look rubbish and make adjustment a faf.

I will be turn up some proper spacers to use Losi springs on the rear as with my own chassis design on the ZX5 with the SP rear arms you can't get the rear low enough (the center of mass is further forward .... significantly).

Billthemina I'm sure your not the only person who will ask that ..... The yellow is softer than the orange .... the lower the rate number the softer teh spring.

RogerM ... I agree with you that the columns are wrongly titled (grams should be lbs). I overlooked that due to the experience I have with Losi and Asso springs. If you use the columns as it should be the data "feels" correct when trying the springs. Of course it is not as precise as measuring.

As for the Losi rear I have solved the issue by using 2 Kyosho preload adjusters on top of each other and the Cyclone D4 lower platforms - fit from the diameter but are higher tha the Losi ones. No porblems so far and looks great.

Changing the front springs really is an issue. But so far I am quite comfortable with the Kyosho front selection from orange to yellow. I tried Asso fronts with an additional plastic spacer but I didn't like the looks and feeling of the springs on the Kyosho.

In any case I would appreciate tested results on the springs ;-)

Best Chrismas wishes

I'm new into the RB5, bought one second hand.
I 'm planning on buying some spares just in case and add maybe some tuning-material.
Actually I have the lime yellow/greenish springs in the front and blue-purple on the rear.
Could someone tell me what springs I might need in my spare box?
Or are the ones that I have pretty common.

I've looked through some setup-sheets and encountered these allready
front: Silver (70), orange (?), lime yellow(75), lime green (?)..
rear: Blue (68), mauve (72?) , silver (?), ...

Which of these should I buy?

You can have a look here for off-road springs. There is also a chart in attachment some message upward.
