Default diff tightening

Hey guys, just wondering if some people are finding that the diff has to be super tight almost locked to keep it from slipping.
I finally got the car working fairly well...need some more rear traction and think I am going to change to saddle packs to see how that works.

Diff is built well and smooth just needs to be cranked down to keep it from slipping.

Hi,
I Just finished a hole season with my SV at my local club and mine is just as the manual says, open 90 degree from fully tight, have you done the cirlip mod?

You open/stretch the circlip with some circlip pliers before you position it in the diiff so it sits in it's recess nice and tight which prevents any slipping or loosening of the diff.

Try a new set of spring washers in the diff. Mine lost their springyness.

The indoor season is coming. Is there anyone who has driven the Cougar indoor on carpet and have some setup tips?

Hi Simon
Do you have a clay setup for a very bumpy track I have to use control tyres which are X-2000 Losi on back J concepts bar codes on the front.. Anything I like can be used on the front.. Im just using the setup in the manuel but it seems to have way to much steering and could also do with some more rear end grip if at all possible...But this maybe because of the tyres not to sure also must use the foam that comes with the tyres as well...Im using an 8.5 with 2.6 ratio would like to try the 2.8 ratio but don't have the Layshaft gear at the minute...Any help would be greatly appreciated..

G'Day MP9,

I've been running a Cougar in Sydney for a few months now at Ryde, Castle Hill and St Ives tracks which usually have pretty good grip for the big events. Is the surface high grip clay? At the recent NSW State titles we had heaps of grip on the clay but the surface wasn't really bumpy.

I ran x2000's at the Ryde Club challenge with J Concepts barcodes at the front.

When I first ran the car it had heaps of steering and to dial some of it out I run thicker shock oil up to 40wt Associated at the front with standard spring i think its 3.5. I've flipped the front arms to give more wheel base also.

I run the rear shocks at the back of the gearbox and suspension arms. My theory is it will add a little more weight over the rear wheels with the shocks at the back.

Rear shock mounted on the inner most hole on the shock tower and middle hole at the arm. Currently I run the rear a little soft with 25 to 30 wt oil and a softer spring than standard.

Car seems to go OK and still steers very well it's more predictable for me with this style of setup.

All the best

I ended swapping out the plastic part/ retaining ring that sits up against the C clip with a metal one out of a CAT SX diff. If the CAT SX has this why did the Cougar not come with a metal retaining ring?

Default Couple of issues

Ok, so after much frustration with the diff I have purchased all new insides to the diff. Rebuilt it last night. Seems better for sure. However the two internal gears still catch and do not run free like they do when the tranny halves aren't screwed together.. Any ideas.

I have also reversed the shocks and notice that now the springs rub on the tie rods.. Tried putting in some spacers on the shock at the top to move it out some but still rubbing .

It's not got any weight added front or rear. I tend to only run the from weight when I feel a need to stop the front end lifting up under power.

Just bought a Cougar SV and was wondering whether you generally run slim or normal width front rims. I have been racing a XXX-CR for the past few years with the following:

Carpet => yellow 2WD minipins on normal rims
Grass => yellow 2WD minispikes on normal rims (or staggers on slim rims if fresh grass)
Astro=> yellow staggers on slim rims.

Same for the Cougar?

Carpet => yellow 2WD minipins on normal rims at bridgeford any where elsewith more grip eg broxtowe/ardent staggers on slim rims seam to be the popular choice
Grass => yellow 2WD staggers on slim rims worn or new
Astro=> yellow staggers on slim rims.
