Paint removal
Hi all. Got a brand new shell with a car I brought but the paint is awful. Is there a way I can get the paint off and start again?

Save your time and effort and just buy a new shell! Even after removing it, some of the paint may have stained the lexan or there may be score marks in it etc..
But....if you do want to, then brake fluid works. Pour some in it and soak some paper towels in it and put them in the shell. Leave it 20 mins then scrub and clean. Repeat as needed. Did I mention just buying a new shell? |

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but buying a new shell is really the easiest way to go... how much is a new shell, £20 if that, do something that makes you £20 cos it will still be quicker than trying to remove the paint. Brake fluid can also weaken the shell, making it brittle.
Did anyone mention yet how much easier it is to buy a new shell.... Can you see a trend starting to form here ??? |

I'm surprised that no-one has recommended that instead of the hassle, effort and time, you just buy a new shell?

A new shell? Oh yeah!
Lol. I have brought a new shell and running with that, but rather than throw away the new bulldog, thought i may be able to save it. Its currently a girly barbie pink, really bad! I will never use it in that colour, so just had an idea to see if i could strip it.
How about nail varnish remover? Thanks for the info and the general consensous of the top tip! |

deffinately don't use nail varnish remover as most contain acetone and this WILL fog the lexan..

If you dont want to buy a new shell..... how about using lots of stickers/decals to hide the colour as much as possible..!!!!!

If it's painted using waterbased paints, could you not just soak it for a few days and them use a scrubbing pad (those green things) or a brillo pad to take the paint off ?
I know if it's good old fashioned solvent based paint you have no chance. If you 'brillo' it you will scratch the hell out of it, but you won't notice it once it's painted again. Do not scratch the windows though as you won't be painting them and it will look a bugger ! |

Paint
Yeah maybe a few stickers could hide it a bit, but at the end of the day i aint going to run the car with that body at the track, and the car doesnt go outside so its just sitting there. I'll try the brake fluid - or can i just paint the outside? Not bothered if it scratches, and then i'll put loads of stickers on it

Theres always the option of using a proper plastic primer then painting the outside of the shell, paint as normal and at least you have a useable bashing shell?

I successfully stripped lexan sheels (both 20r old paint and recent stuff) with an auto valeting product called Autosmart Tardis - you can buy it on eBay. It smells remarkably like Tamiyas own lexan cleaner, but its about 1/20th the price. Some paints it seem to almost dissolve on contact, other take a lot longer.
I soak a cotton rag , lay it on the shell for a few minutes and then rub away at the paint. I've cleaned an Avante shell in under 10 minutes, but a Durga shell took several hours on and off, and a vintage Egress shell, brush painted with various paints took a long time. It works, doesn;t fog or micro craze the lexan and can be repainted without issue. Original Avante 58072 shell, stripped of paint in 2012.. Original Egress 58079 shell, before..(yes that is hammerite on the undercowl!) during.. repainted.. Original 58100 Top Force, on arrival.. after stripping and repainting.. |
