Try and see if there is a BIOS update for the motherboard. Also check the hard disk drive for defects as there maybe a bad block at the start of the drive which is causing the problem. Another thing to make sure of is that there is no USB sticks in, no floppy disks in the floppy drive. You may want to make sure that your hard disk is the first device to boot in the BIOS settings.

Sounds like a hard drive problem to me....
Have you tried reformatting the disk properly (try googling killdisk). Then start again.

Regards,

I assume this laptop worked previously?

I doubt it would need a bios update unless it's very old as XP has been around a while now. I'm with Mark on the HDD being the problem

Boot from the CD, then press R to get to the recovery console.

NTLDR is under i386 on the cd (assuming D: is the cd drive and C: is where windows is installed)

1: "COPY D:\i386\ntldr C:\" and press ENTER.
2: "COPY D:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\" and hit Enter again
3: Remove the CD and type EXIT (or reboot)

Hope that helps
Chris

Regards,
It sounds like a hard disk problem to me too, or more likely a problem with the connection (probably SATA) or the power going to the drive.

I have this recently, and deconnecting then reconnecting the SATA lead and power to the HD fixed it. It was on a large desktop PC though, so was easier to tend to.

Don't know how easy this will be to test on your laptop. Maybe remove the drive and put it back again.

Make sure the BIOS is setup properly, and recognising all your disks.

if it is a fresh install, and you are having issue's, run KillDisk first, to remove any traces off the drive, then re-try the XP installation.

Good luck, seems like you had a dodgy sector on the drive somewhere. killdisk works wonders for this sort of thing LOL.

if the drive don't work after KillDisk, the drive is knackered anyways!! Used it a few times now.
