FrSky 2.4 module in 3VC

Hi everyone,
I've just ordered a FrSky module and receiver from Giantcod, and was wondering if anyone else has fitted one to a Futaba 3VC?

Not had it yet so can't read the instructions but apparently it's just a case of soldering 3 wires (pos, neg and PPM feed)

My question is where will I find the PPM feed in my transmitter?

I was thinking of this for converting my two lads to 2.4
as they both have the 3VC TX's

Just went onto the FrSky website and downloaded the manual
and its basically plug n play like the Futaba 2.4 units

All you have to do is make sure the TX is in PPM mode which is in the
menus under MOD ( either PPM or PCM )

Hi, Can't put my fingers on the unit part numbers I ordered, but it is the "hack" module ie the one that goes inside the tranny rather than the plug in box. It appears to be hard wired into the tranny

hi,

if you want 2.4 in a 3vc or 3vcs you cant go cheaper than this,

i have these in both my 3vcs's and purchased extras so i can use the recievers in my other cars and have spare transmitter modules....

Thanks, but FrSky is ordered now, and it was £25 delivered so not too bad

yours is plug and play though so definitely a good buy for someone else!

I'm using the FrSky 2.4GHz module and receiver on my Futaba 3VC and it works great. Mine has Telemetry function, got it from Hobbyking. It's really value for money. There are 2 models, the older model doesn't have telemetry while the newer model has. I've used Corona and Assan 2.4GHz modules in the past and Frsky is the best. Check it out...

the only problem with these 2.4 systems are the receivers
they rx leads plug in the side and not the top like the real 2.4 units and make wiring a nightmare !

FrSky do a 4 chanell RX thats smaller the the Futaba unit

I've not seen anyone using this 4 channel RX with their FrSky module, including myself. But i have seen a couple of my buddies using this same RX on their Futaba 4PK/4PKS instead of the original Futaba FASST RX and it works perfectly...

Yeah I know a couple of peeps have bought this RX with the Futaba TX Module and report it works great for the price

Just wondered if FrSky done a TX Module themselves as the Futaba one is £100 on its own !

And I now know where to wire the hack unit in so will be doing that as soon as it arrives. I'll post up how it goes.

Keep us updated John. Im doing this to all the older 40Mhz KO and Sanwa radios now and so far its flawless.

re: Corona system. Old DSSS tech, prone to interference issues and not built particularly well. Thats just what Ive heard; I personally have no experience with them.

re: FrSky 4CH wiring. The reciever is definately low budget (its wrapped in cardboard!) but it is pretty good. The wiring isnt too big a problem, but it does give the RX a bigger footprint.
You can remove the cardboard should you wish.
You also have to poke a little hole through the outer casing in order to have access to the BIND button. I done this with a fine tip soldering iron - melted a neat hole through the plastic "window" in the cardboard sleeve.

Re: FrSky "hack" module - John, you should be fine getting it from Giant Cod as they only use the new stock, but for anyhone else - just ensure that your PPM wire has a diode on the end. This was added recently to the new batch coming from China to elimnate a bug where current was coming back up the PPM wire and frying your 2.4Ghz module. If it doesnt have the diode, the FrSky website has details of the diode rating and type which you can get from Maplin / RS / etc for a few pence. WELL WORTH DOING!

Yeah, thats the way I do it too, only thing is you need to make the module case very secure, because if it is pulled out, either by you if you forget a year down the line, or if you sell it on - then you rip the FrSky module out by the short and curly's heheh
Havent quite figured out the best way to stop this. DOnt like the idea of gluing in the module, so at the moment, it just has a safety sticker over it saying "Dont remove"

If you look on the giantcod forum they are using some kind of multiplug/socket that fits onto the transmitter pins, so it's still removable

Don't get the Corona, seen many having interference issues and the quality is not too good. Assan is pretty good but the best is still FrSky...

Frsky bits came this morning, spent a couple of hours installing it and it works perfect on the bench ;-) wont be able to race test it till my new car arrives, but I'm sure it will work great.

Hard wired it to the module board in the end as it was too cramped to try and fit the new module into an empty Futaba case I had knocking about.

The receiver is tiny! and the aerial is only about an inch long so I wont need an aerial tube which is nice.

It is also equipped with a failsafe which can be programmed however you want it. Binding was a breeze.

For what its worth, I was suspicious about the aerial cable being so short, plus it was near my sensor and ESC/RX cable. However, the FrSky system also comes with a really nifty "range test" feature, and using this, my car literally went so far away that I had to stop simply because I couldnt see it properly! (and thats on low range mode)

So now, no aerial sticking out of my buggy, and the RX aerial cable is tie-wrapped onto the ESC/RX lead with no interference whatsoever.

What an amazing piece of kit for £25 all in!!
