Losi CR diff fitted to X-5.
I have just fitted the Losi CR diff into my X-5.
Parts required: X-Factory X-5 diff gear LOSA6951 diff balls LOSA3038 CR outdrives pair LOSA6907 5x8mm bearing pair LOSA3018 HD thrust bearing set in cage LOSA3039 CR diff rings and shims LOSA2908 Monster diff spring and screw set The whole thing builds together as per the XXX-CR manual as found online, very very easy to build and the diff operation is silky smooth. The only change from this manual, is that I have needed to use the shims aswell as the copper rings - as I had a little side to side slop to shim out. The reason for this, is I dislike the Losi steel diffs pre-CR, this one is a big improvement, so now I have a fair comparison (steel vs plastic) Chris |

It was the logical thing to do.

Yhmmmmm, Losi differential superior to AE unit is it?
Maybe fit the unit because spare time on your hands you have? |

I fitted only CR shims on mine (on XXX plastic outdrives). I glued the copper rings to the outdrives. The diff is very smooth but, most important, it doesn't deteriorate after many runs. I believe this is because the slipping happens between the copper ring and the steel ring, not the steel ring and the balls. Hope it makes sense |

the XXXcr diff is good when wet or slippery but when the grip comes up you will have trouble with the diff as it's designed to slip, as I found out back in October at Kidderminster, you just loose all of the positive feel and acceleration out of corners. I have now gone back to a steel diff in the back of my XX4.

Hi Brian,
OK I can imagine that as a factor. Running the front one way, would it not lessen that slip since there is a pull from the front too? I dislike the steel diff, which is basically as per the rear of the XXX4-G+ I will run it for the first time at Batley on Sunday, but will I find that over time the plates will slip more and more as they all settle in and the grease turns runny due to the heat? |

I run my rear diff similar to yours Chris but I use the steel outdrives in the rear and it works out real well. I put 5 race days on it before a rebuild and I could have ran another race day. I would not go any other way. I built my front diff with the CR set up with composite diffs and it is still smooth as silk. I'm sure it will go 5-6 more race days easy..........

It only did this towards the end of a run, last 1-2 minutes, but at the start of a run the car feels like you have a normal diff in. Like you say there is a heat process which causes this. The plates will have settled after a few minutes of running, so it's not going to just happen at a random time, be prepared for it to start straight away when running on high grip surfaces.

I'll catch up with you on sunday and see what you think. very intresting to know that it only works on wet/ slippery conditions, could make a good tunnig ade for us jammers

Well I have noticed that I have had to tighten the diff more than id like to, to stop it slipping. Although the diff action is super__smooth and rolls asif the bolt isn't overly tight, so it must be okay.
Infact, this will be a good thing as it won't loosen. Maybe I say this as I have been re-using old bolts and captive nuts for donkeys years! I might have just forgotten what a new nut and bolt feels like. Chris |
