4WD finals day was again greeted by bright sunshine and whilst temperatures weren't too high in the early morning as the quick practice round hit the track - they were sure to rise.

Once again the day started early, transmitters were to be impounded prior to the start of untimed practice at 09:00am, with the final two rounds of quliafying scheduled to run between 10:15am and 14:09pm.

Simon Moss is running the Schumacher CAT SX here in Bilbao. The car is fairly standard with no development parts that we could see. Simon is using the 'stiff' chassis which has been custom machined to fit his lipo.

Simon went to a 4.5 motor during qualifying.

4WD Qualifying Round 4
Marc Rheinard pipped Neil Cragg to the win in round 4 by less than half a second to go equal on points with the provisional TQ man - the time was slower than Neils fastest so Neil keeps the overall TQ.

GRENIT RC Audio Timer 3.0
One of the Swedish drivers showed us a new product from Grenit - the 'RC Audio Timer 3.0' - which to put it simply records laptimes in a similar fashion to the Orion Lap Counter system, using an infrared transponder in the car which is coupled with a track-level receiver to record the laps.

What makes the Audio Timer unique however is the live feedback the racer gets. The trackside receiver transmits the times live to the racer via a receiver and headphones - and they get instant verbal information on how the new line they are trying is effecting their lap times. You can even connect the unit to the computer afterwards to download all the laps for analysis.

The setup comes in a padded box

Transponder and trackside receiver

Drivers audio receiver

Both main units are powered by 2x AA

Hmmm, no internet for 2 days at the track - for us at least. Hopefully we'll have another option available again soon so we can do some semi-live updates.

Fernando Santamaria Victor and Adrian used the Euro 2009 to test a prototype in collaboration with the pilot Joserra Ortiz, president of the club Organizer. The car uses some old Kyosho ZXR parts - the gear differentials have been modified to hold oil to adjust action.

Interview with Viktor Wilck from Sweden

How long have you been racing?
9 years, since I was 12 years old.

What are your best ever results on-road and off road?
I finished 5th at the World Championships 2006 in Italy, for touring cars. I competed in the Euros two years ago in Finland and made the B main, that is the only other off road event I have raced in.

Favorite class of racing?
Touring cars, I don't usually race offroad. I have started to race 1/8 scale nitro offroad just this year, I find it a little harder though.

Did you do much practice with the TRF511 before coming here?
We practiced two days in Germany.

Did you drive the 501x prior to driving the 511, if so what do you like about the updated model?

Yeah we used it at the euros in Finland. the 511 is easier to assemble, it's pretty much the same car.

ABBA or Ace of Base?
Abba :)

Have you been to the Tamiya factory - and can Jimmy come next time?
i have been there two times, It's by special invite only. I will ask for Jimmy. (yay)

Were you worried that you would be at a disadvantage joining the event halfway into the week when other drivers have had chance to learn the track with the 2wd?
Maybe a little bit but it's hard to say, 2wd and 4wd is such a different class, so same difference.

You said in the press conference that this is your first time driving on an astroturf track, which surfaces do you normally race on?
With touring csars it is normally carpet indoors and asphalt outdoors.

What do you do for your day job?
Actually now I race full time. Mainly it is weekends, but we try to practice in the week before big events.

It was hot as ....

Joffrey thermalled and had to be rebooted with this nifty electric motor cooler

Another great run from Marc Rheinard gave him the new fastest time - enough to eclipse Neil Craggs time and with equal points it was Rheinard that snatched the overall TQ. Neil Cragg lost a turnbuckle and wasn't able to finish his heat. Jorn Neumann and Viktor Wilck were both on very fast pace and would make the A final.

Press Conference for Rounds 4 and 5.
Once again the two final press conferences were held together due to the staggering of heats meaning that the top 3 could be estimated early on in round 5. First at the table were Marc Rheinard who TQ'd round 4, Neil Cragg in 2nd place and Lee Martin making his first 4wd press conference appearance in 3rd place.
Lee spoke first, speaking mainly of his problems in round 5 where a car he'd lapped landed on top of him coming off the jump, and thus breaking his car - oops. Lee's round 4 run was pretty good - well, good enough to take 3rd in round even having made two mistakes. Lee didn't really have much else to say, we think he was pretty tired from all the heat, helooked proper badgered.

Neil continues to be happy with his car, had a good run and has now been demoted to 2nd on the grid following Marcs super round 5 time. Still... many cars have won the final from 2nd on the grid including Hupo in the 2wd class at this event, so fingers crossed Neil can maintain his title this year.
Marc spoke finally, having made a 12/5:07 qualifying time for round 4, Marc was happy with his no-mistakes run and is really happy with his car which is solid annd consistent, having finished every round of qualifying with a good score. Marcstated that the TRF team had found a good setup at the Euros warm up and hadn't needed to make any changes from that set up.

For the second part of the press conference, Marc remained in the centre seat, joined by Jorn Neumann in 2nd place and Viktor Wilck in 3rd place. Wilck was congratulated on his impressive score, having never raced on astroturf before, and this being only the second off-road competition that Viktor has participated in. Jorn already knew prior to his first qualifying run that he would lose his best score for failure to marshal, but all the same Jorn qualifies with a 2nd and 4th place and is happy with these results, stating his car is very good and he'll be using used tyres in the final.
Once again Marc spoke, happy about his 12/5:03 round score, but again stating that the magical 13 laps would most probably be unachievable. Marcs new fastest time places him on pole position ahead of Neil Cragg. Marc also requested that for A final practice, the start tone could be included to prepare the drivers for the start of the main races.

*Jorn loses his best time due to not marshalling in round one

A final practice.
Marc Rheinards request was granted and the practice final took off from the grid, F1 style start with the countdown vocally but no tone. Rheinard made away from the start with Cragg hot on his tail looking for a way through, he wasn't kept waiting for long as a roll from Rheinard saw Cragg in 1st place followed by Hupo and Viktor. Chaos at the back of the field saw Bradders and Yardy mud wrestling for last place, but it was Pinisch who won the spot and was soon being lapped by the front crew.

A roll over the quad from Cragg saw Hupo take the lead but he didn't hold this position for long and soon left the track for a tyre change. Bradders took Lee Martin out on the wall of death, and death it was for Lee's B44 as he pulled off the straight with a broken shaft - sounds rather unfortunate.

Overall we're not sure who won because it wasn't timed, and to be honest looked like a whole load of chaos and debauchery, but this is just practice afterall.

A final Leg One
Marc Rheinard lead them away with Neil Cragg close behind and Viktor Wilck looking for a way past in third. Viktor barged his way past Cragg over the tabletop and sailed over the quad after Marc.

Viktor looks for a way past Cragg - no chance

Cragg goes wide and Viktor doesn't hang about

The order was Marc, Viktor then a small gap back to Cragg and another gap to Hupo. Cragg came down the big hill and went up on two wheels - spinning out and losing the position to Hupo. Cragg caught Hupo and when Hupo got it wrong the pair collided but the order didn't change as Cragg waited - with much applause from the gathered crowds.

Cragg gets badly out of shape and it's another Tamiya 1-2-3

Hupo turns too early and Cragg has nowhere to go

Hupo gets shunted off the track by accident.......

....But Cragg waits and gives the position back so it's all good, what a nice man.

Marc and Viktor were just driving perfectly out front - the real race was between Cragg and Hupo for third. Hupo jumped out of the track coming over the table top and Cragg was through but then Cragg came down the hill and went up on two wheels (again) which lost him the position.

Marc had it sewn up out front - Viktor didn't give up

Cragg pushed too hard

The positions remained the same with Viktor pushing Marc all the way to the line and Neil doing the same with Hupo. Marc Rheinard lead a 1-2-3 for Tamiya by taking the win.

Despite his awesome drive, Viktor was disqualified from leg one of the A final on technical inspection after the race - his car was 8g under weight.

A final Leg Two
Marc lead them off and over the quad jump - a huge pileup saw positions change a lot behind the leading pair of Marc and Neil. Lee Martin was upto third with Hupo fourth. As the chaos began to settle down Cragg was chasing Marc and Lee Martin paired up with Hupo in the battle to keep 3rd place. Coming around the hairpin an error from Yardy saw him nose-in to the track marker and chaos ensued as a torrent of cars piled into his side and seeing Yardy drop from 5th place to 8th.

Viktor Wilck stuffs it and Cragg is back through

Rheinard followed by Cragg

The leaders completed lap one and headed over the quad but Lee got it wrong and Hupo was up to third followed closely by Viktor as Lee dropped two places. The top 5 continued to race closely together but Rheinard was keen to secure his title on the second leg and started to pull away from the rest of the field. A tumble from Viktor coming over the quad saw Lee Martin promoted into 4th place, but Viktor landed on his wheels and continued the chase.

Cragg keeps his eyes on the prize - Marc drives hard.

Rhienard misses the target - but punts into the wall

Cheering and excitement erupted from the audience as Lee Martin slipped through into 3rd place, whilst seconds later Rehinard rolled coming onto the hairpin and Neil Cragg took the lead.

It was now Cragg and Marc paired up at the front, pulling away from Lee Martin and Hupo continuing to battle for third place. These top four now had a good lead on the rest of the field and generated plenty of excitement with their close racing.

Rheinard landed hard coming off the tabletop jump, totally disturbing his preparation for sailing over the quad, and in a somewhat clumsy manner he navigates his Tamiya over the four jumps one at a time, whilst once again the crowd erupt with ecstatic joy as Lee Martin flies over the top of the struggling pole-man to take 2nd place, followed by Hupo for third.

Rheinard looks on as both Lee and Hupo pass by

But Hupo goes in too hard and rolls - Marc back to third

Hupos third place glory isn't to last long though, as he flips on the banked corner, and Rheinard regains his composure to take the third place and starts to push hard on Lee Martins rear end, as Lee entered the dirt corner Marc slipped it through the inside, making a clean pass and back into 2nd place.

Marc muscles his way inside Lee to re-take the #2 spot - awesome wheel-to-wheel racing

Neil nearly losing it as he comes down the hill with a good lead.

As Marc and Lee battled for 2nd place, Neil saw his chance to push harder and pulled a gap on the fighting pair. Several dances and errors later, the race order was Neil Cragg, Marc Rheinard, Lee Martin and Hupo, but a mistake from Rhainard approaching the quad jump saw Lee Martin overjump to take 2nd place. With Neil safely in the lead and crossing the loop to take the 2nd leg win, all eyes were on Lee and Marc as they entered the straight it was a drag race down towards the loop with Lee holding 2nd place just 0.06 of a second ahead of 3rd place Marc.

Marc goes low......

...Lee goes high to again re-take 2nd

With two legs completed the third leg was going to be an exciting race, with four possible drivers who could still take the championship with their current scores - Marc Rheinard, Neil Cragg, Lee Martin or Hupo.

After much mumbling and grunting Manolis finally hit the track with his 4WD creation -albeit just the one race lap. We hope that Manolis can get his car ready BEFORE the event next time!

Interview wit Pererik nordman - nordic 4wd champ, kyosho driver.

Hola Pererik, where do you come from?
I live in Stockholm, Sweden.

Where do you normally race?
My home track is Greenhill in Skarpnack.

How long have you been racing model cars?
15 years.

Which classes?
Been racing touring cars for 12 years, and off road I did two years prior to that, now I'm back to buggying again.

Have you ever been a Viking?
Yes, I think that's a long time ago though.

You seem quite a big thing on the Swedish scene, you are the current Nordik 4wd champion? What other titles have you won?
This year I won the Swedish cup in offroad, both 2wd and 4wd. And I won the middle swedish cup in 2wd.

Are you just concentrating on off-road at the moment then?
I don't own a touring car at the moment but I'm considering racing one in the winter, I haven't really decided what I'll do in the winter season yet..

You have a busy race calender at the moment, with the Euros this week, and the Swedish Championships next week, which event are you the most enthusiastic about?
Of course for the Euros it is the race of the year, for 2wd I finished 14th overall so really pleased with that, I was aiming for top 40. Qualified 27th in 4wd. this is my first ever euros offroad.

Do you like the food in Spain?
A lot of things are raw,so no i wouldn't say I like the food here.

Interview with Ben Jemison - UK Junior super star

This is your first European Championships event - have you enjoyed being here?
I am enjoying it now after a bad start with breaking my car in 2wd and not enjoying the track to start with, but finished E4 in 2wd and doing well in 4wd so I'm enjoying it more now.

Many fellow top dogs seem to have ventured towards the 8th scalle rallycross scene, with some dropping out of 1/10th electric offroad altogether, do you see yourself following the same path now that you are all team?
Ehm yeah, I've started getting together some rallycross stuff. I'll probably start attending some smaller club events to get started, but I don't see myself dropping out of 1/10th electric offroad altogether, I never want to drop out.

Now that you've had chance to suss out the competition, who do you think will be the most difficult to beat?
The people who are qualifying with similar scores to me but who will be difficult to beat are probsbly Adam Skelding, Matt Latham and Kev Lee.

You've qualified in the C final in 4WD, that's a great result for your first Euros, to what do you owe your success?
Mick, Neil Cragg and Paul Bradby have been a great help to me this week with not only my car set up but also my driving around the track.

Do you like the food in Spainland?
I've been eating food that I would normally eat back home, like pizza, I'm not really one to try new foods.

Did you bring any money with you?
Yeah I did. there's not much left now though - why is this country so expensive?

Were you suprised to see LeeMag here?
Erm yes, he usually drops out at the last minute like at the clash and the neo where I had to fend for myself.

As an experienced track designer, what are your general feelings about the track here in Bilbao?
I can't really compare it to other European tracks, in my opinion the track hasn't been very well thought out in places, for example the quad because this is where it's going to be won or lost. the dirt sections have kinda been ruined by putting the speed bumps in, and because of that it's been cut up badly. The surface has been terrible when conditions have been moist when running 2wd because of the type of astro (rubber backed) that has been used.

ow does it compare to Robin Hood Raceway?
There is no comparison - Robin hood raceway is superior to all of the tracks I've raced on. RHR - Euros 2010? The venue is definitely capable of running a Euros event, it would just need undercover pitting which could be solved with using a marquee.

How many cans of Energy Drink are required to complete each round of racing on this track?
I usually consume 3 cans of dogmilk per round of qualifying but in the warmer weather I drink more water - i like to water down my dogmilk.

You seem a bit quiet at the moment, are you feeling factory?
Now that I've been to a Euros event, I feel spoilt by the organisation that we have in the UK.

We spied these dual-rate springs (below)at the Eden Park National in the UK a few weeks back. It seemed like nearly every XFactory driver was trying them on the X5 at least - hand made in Belgium by an XFactory sponsored driver, it seems they're only available to XFactory team drivers from what we were told. The usual round profile is gradually flattened toward one end - which progressively softens that end of the spring.

The springs are modified Losi items.

The softer top half compresses first

No idea if they work better - but they do look cool!

A final Leg Three - the decider.
The start was clean for the front runners and around the first few corners. Neil rolled over and back onto his wheels after the quad - losing second place to Viktor but managing to keep Hupo Honigl behind. Hupo went too wide on the next lap as he lined up for the quad - clipping the pipe and getting sucked into it so the first three of Marc, Viktor and Neil all extended their lead as they fought each other.

Rheinard leading them around turn two

Cragg rolls after the quad

Lee Martin gets a Jorn up his bottom

-Lap 2 - as Hupo makes a mistake and falls back, Jorn and Lee are once again going off their pups

Neil made a mistake similar to Hupos on the next lap and almost lost his third place - Marc and Viktor pulled a small lead but Neil wasn't finished and put in some heroic laps to quickly close the gap. Viktor rolled as the three came down the hill and Neil was through for second with Viktor right on his tail.

Lee and Jorn are AT IT AGAIN!

Bullseye!! Hupo loses it coming down the hill.

Viktor also loses it down the hill......

......Cragg makes his move for 2nd

Marc wasn't making mistakes and to catch him Neil would have to drive on the edge - too close to the edge it seems as Neil made a mistake after the straight over the small jump, positions didn't change after a tangle with Viktor but Marc was now even further ahead.

Viktor crashed, then Neil Crashed - again the two ended up together on the track and with only one lap to go there was no chance of catching Marc. Neil clipped the pipe as he entered the dirt section just before the finish line and Viktor was through for second. Marc took the win with an amazing consistent display of driving which also gave him the overall title.

Viktor again loses control on the final lap - but after an error from Cragg he got the position back.
