Im not sure if Jimmy will make this thread sticky but i thought it would be good to have some where to ask questions and chat to others who are going.

Firstly has anyone found any good prices on flights, the best prices i have found is £347 per person flying out on the sat before and flying home on the sunday after.
This was flying out from manchester via helsinki then an internal flight to vaasa.

Mrs oOple
01-03-2007, 10:13 PM
Hiya Lee, looks like we've found the same flights as you have, I searched a number of websites trying to find a good deal, some prices came back at 1600+ per person, I think 335 each was the best I found, on expedia.
Looking for car hire now, expedia didn't offer the most competitive car hire rate so I'll continue looking around. It'd be interesting to know what deals other people have found.

We got our flights through BA for £170 return each, from Heathrow to Helsinki, and the 6 of us are going to hire a minibus (£500 for 8 days) and drive the last 240 miles.

Mrs oOple
01-03-2007, 10:29 PM
I looked into flying to Helsinki then driving the rest of the way, but it was going to work out just as expensive and very inconvenient as far as time constraints. It's more expensive to fly from Manchester than Heathrow, but for us to travel to Heathrow would increase the cost just as much anyway. So we're going for the convenience factor and just flying to Vaasa with one stop each way.

Guys and girls!

The distance betwen helsinki and wasa is only like 400-500km and all of you are
probobly all gona rent cars any way so see if skipping the last domestic flight
can save some money.

Another thing might be to see if you can go via stockholm arlanda?
they have direct flights to Wasa there if i am not wrong.

Otherwice there is some space left in my car to the euros :D

Remember to check the price from SAS/Blue1. They have a discount for this event, but I don't know how much is it from England. If you are flying to Vaasa, I would recommend to go via Stockholm. I checked the price from Blue1 and Manchester-Vaasa-Manchester was around 280£ without discount. The timetables are not the best possible, but we are sorting it out with SAS at the moment. I think www.amadeus.net (http://www.amadeus.net) is pretty good place to find flight timetables.

The road from Helsinki to Vaasa is pretty good. It's 400 kilometers so it takes around five hours to drive to Vaasa. Only problem is that there are plenty of speed cameras on the way :)

BTW Jimmy, we have a free internet access at the track for you

Prices for flights are going up by the week now. We ended up paying about £225 each from Bristol to Stockholm then on to Vassa. Its a long wait in Stockholm but hey!

BTW the SAS/Blue1 discount is a rip off, you have to fly "economy plus" which is about £150 more than economy, you then get your 10% discount.

Last time we went to the Euros (austria) we wen't even allowed a magazine on the plane. So - how do you fly with the racing gear? I don't take much, but obviously charger, cells, 2 cars, controller and a few spares, tools and tyres.
Are they a bit funny with cells and odd looking electric bits in your checked baggage?

when you go to "check in" tell them that you got sporting goods and tools

When i went to the LRP race a few years ago they pulled us all to obe side and went through everything on the UK side, they didnt like the look of the pro trak charger with a keypad on the front and a digi display:D but they were fine and even let motor spray and stuff pass through.

On the german side when we were coming back they didnt even look at our stuff or xray it we were running that late but mr drescher still managed to get a £45 charge for excess baggage:D

Hi

Can anyone tell me whether the Bus service is going to be a reliable way to get around for the week with the obvious load of equipment we'll be carrying backwards and forwards? I understand that it runs from 6 am to 9pm but do you know how often?

I ask because i'm flying to Helsinki and planning on driving up to Vaasa, but wondered whether it would be worth just renting the car for one day to get me to Vaasa Airport. Then i could catch the bus to the hotel and use it for the rest of the week and rent another car on the sunday to get me back to Helsinki.

Cheers

Lee

I was in Finland at the "warm-up" race a week after some of the brits were there to practise. From my experience I don't think it was a waste of time. The track was a bit more tricky than the pictures show, at least I think so. As far as I know the track surface has been somewhat of a challenge. Originally it held up very well, but was very dusty. With some chemical assistance, the dust issue was almost gone, but the surface became very "rutted" at some places. I actually hope that the track will be bumpy, as we got our cars to work well at the race

VERY IMPORTANT :- East Power 4200 cells. (Demon FIRECRACKERS)
EFRA have decided in the last few days that the version of this cell fitted with
the BLACK fibre disc around the positive button is not allowed. The cell that
was homologated has a RED disc and only RED disc versions will be allowed.

I just bought some of these to take to the Euros - I will have to check which they are - otherwise I'm a bit stuffed.:(

PaulRotheram
10-07-2007, 02:07 PM
can anyone tell me why the one with a black disc is not allowed? if its just because of the color then its abit pathetic. I've not heard of any difference in the cells..

anyone?

_sleigh_
10-07-2007, 02:10 PM
The way I understand it, the coloured disc is used to identify a slight difference in the cell while in the manufacturing process. Can't remember which way round this is, but one is High Voltage and the other is High Capacity.

And as the "red disc" version was submitted for homologation, it only that type that can be used within EFRA meetings

jimmy
10-07-2007, 02:13 PM
yeah mine are illegal
I guess there's less to carry then - one pack in each car and nothing else! :D

jarkkom
10-07-2007, 02:19 PM
It's funny how EFRA is trying to kill this sport every way they can. First 1/12th scale and now this.

_sleigh_
10-07-2007, 02:28 PM
jarkkom... It's not EFRA's fault, if the manufacturer had sent both samples for homologation in time, then there would never have been a problem. Rules are rules and other manufacturers manage to do things correctly.

Paul.... I think the BLACK disc version has been about in the UK for a while now. But again the RED disc version was the one originally sent to the BRCA EB for sampling.

jimmy
10-07-2007, 02:29 PM
is there actually a difference or is it that they ran out of red discs ? :o

_sleigh_

The EFRA list as origionally issued only ever said red cap was legal. As did BRCA, but BRCA then decided to allow both. EFRA didn't.

21-07-2007, 08:57 AM
It's mid day and I just woke up :eh?: we have to move out of our room - in fact we all do, since they didn't have the proper rooms available as we are all a day earlier than we should be (flights changed)

Then we're gonna have a look around vaasa I think. There's not much point going to the track again since it's just a building site - they are getting everything ready still, looks like a heck of a lot of work. They have three big plasma screens, two for the 'circus tent' pitting area and one for outside on the wall I think. The rostrum is fantastic, it's massive.

The track was wet yesterday and it's predicted to rain ALL week next week. Today it's really nice though.

You want me to 'rant' on your behalf Jimmy?

Oh and go stand at the back of the track giving it the middle finger, I'll 'print screen' for yah from the webcam ;)

Edit... What's this for then? You'd think it would allow for 'track shots' (am I ranting ok?)

In so many words they told me to shove the media pass up my arse. :eh?:

Oh well - I din't come to take photos, but I wouldn't of come if I knew I couldn't, if that makes sense. Hope the car goes ok now otherwise theres nowt left! :D The track is a bit wet still so the tyres aren't really gripping. Someone went out on schumachers (the altername tyre) and they were so toss that they stopped after one corner.

When I did second practice I purposely went slow so I could start at the back - I went and broke it anyway though so hey. Dave "beer" Church is in my heat so I think I can take him. :)

Ash is right, I went out to chill over my upset that I can't take photos. I came back in time for my qualifier and I see photographers all over the track - what a load of ARSE. No explanation, I even asked Paul and he said the EFRA guy agreed with the organisers descision.. But I guess it's now allowed - but in the process they made me miss all the sun and pretty much killed my enthusiasm to do a race report today.

Looking at the round results, obviously Neil has 2 1's counting, Pidge has a 2 and a 3, Cree has a pair of 4's, think Barton has a 7 and 5, and Moss has a pair of 8's, but then you have Tricky with a 4, and Dresch with a 6 so was just wondering where this left people sitting overnight?

Best of luck for finals day guys!

There seems to be a bit of action going on, on the track with marshalls and cars beginning to line up

From what I can make out, Neil has a nice lead and Lee is in 2nd! But it's not easy viewing.

Edit - From watching the webcam I think Neil won that 2nd leg with Lee in 2nd... That would make Neil the 2wd Euro champ huh, nice work.

Neil is the victor. Lee Martin had the fastest laps of the week in that leg and looked like he could take it from Neil until he rolled.

Also... well done to Tricky for winning the B, im sure he wishes it was the A but a good result still. Well done to Ben Riley for also making the B final.

Looking at the positions, many of the Brits have done ace. Well done to those in the C final too, John Spencer qualified well - wonder why he dnf'd the final?
