It's not a necessity, just do it as a matter of maintainance.
It's also easier if you run the Losi 2wd as well as you only need to carry one type of rear wishbone and hub.

The rear end feels better with it on to me. More chuckable and nimble. May just be my head playing tricks on me though :P

it also moves the shocks further inboard at the wishbone end,and stands them up,
cr wishbones are stronger
and u get the bonus of vla

So what parts are needed?
I think the rear arms/wishbones are the same now with the new XX-4 kits...and I would obviously have to use the new CR hubs....but, what about the pivot blocks?
Do you just use the CR pivot blocks that come with the new CR...or XX-4 blocks? Or, are these the same?

xx4 blocks but flip them over, so left on right right one on left and dremel a grove in so the diff halfs don't rub.

You can't use the wishbones that come with the XX4 kit, as they are BK2 wishbones and are too long.
You will need the following items.
A2129 XXXcr hubs
A2132 XXXcr rear wishbones
A2113 2deg Pivot support
The XXXcr rear pivot support is the same as the XX4, you just need to cut the brace off.

Or you can butcher the chassis so that you can leave the back part of the brace on - this is how i have done my car. Takes a while though, but should stop/reduce chances of you breaking pivot blocks/chassis

personly i felt it made the x5 better over small bumps. never ran a xx4 with out the cr rear end outdoors but Ians car self very good with the xxxcr rear A arms and hubs fitted at the f3s
