LiPo Charging Pouch
Thinking out aloud, and want to try and get an answer to this question that has been bugging me.
Right, with all safety equipment, that is sold in the UK, it has to carry the Kite Mark (BSi stamp of approval), so, you invest your money in a LiPo charging pouch, how do you know it will work, how is it tested and rated, and in the end, if the bag fails to do it's intended purpose, the fact that it isn't tested, how do you get recourse? |
oh no, I fear a BRCA approved list coming:thumbdown:
sorry but can't answer your concerns though I have the LP-Guard but it has no BSi Kite mark |
you can see where I am coming from though. If you have a fire blanket in your kitchen or work place, it has to of passed a rigorous test to ensure it conforms to regualtions. Now, we have these pouches, which are supposed to not extinguish a combustion, but contain it.
|
I share the same thoughts exactly.
I could make a pouch tomorrow and sell it, without any regulation how do we ensure they are even worth the effort? |
so I am not alone then in these thoughts. The reason it bothers me, is that these are sold as safety items.
Now, they have to work in a flame containment manner, as when the lipo goes, the chemicals within the cell, combust on contact with atmosphere, so the bags musn't be air tight, as once it has burnt the oxygen in the back, you open it, and poof, up it goes again, so they need to be able to hold together whilst the combustion goes on. |
People also need to use them correctly. I've seen many people using them without the flap closed properly

im going to charge mine in an oven glove...
|
if the flaps open, might as well have the cell out. As it stands, and this isn't enforced by the BRCA, it is just a recomendation (and in the light of NiMH's still going pop 'cause you looked at them wrong'), seems OTT. There is nothing to stop me, going out and buying a plumbers soldering mat (the ones used to protect the walls from flames), stitching it together, bit of velcro, and I got a LiPo sack.
Just bothers me that, if the item is such a SAFETY item, there is nothing in place, it appears, that don't stipulate build regs, flame resistance times etc etc |
are there rules in the brca/efra etc on using em so who is going to legislate it.
do condoms carry a kite mark? |
This is from the Electric Common:
5.3.1 All LiPo packs used for motor power must be charged inside a “Lipo Sack” or similar of recommended charging containers on the approved battery list.fire mitigation device proven to withstand a minimum of an 8.4 V 5000 mAh lithium polymer pack failing destructively without showing external flame. EFRA will include a list |
But packs up to 5500mAh are legal now :eh?:

so that rule is perfectly useless, as the limit is now higher than 5000mah |
Yes it looks that way :-)
Perfect when they change one rule and doesnt look how it may effect other rules! |
and wouldnt they have to test the sack with every make of battery..one lipo may burn brighter than the next make?
|
I thought the idea of the hard case was to keep it all contained??
|
i think it just goes to show what fools(ammended for burgies thin skin) make these rules up,when we have 2 battery types, one burns, the other goes off like a nade and only one has to be victimised..

I want to know where they get the air tight velcro from :eh?:

why is it?
the ruling for lipo safety is out of touch with the real world when compared to the ruling for nimh safety,or dont you agree?..one rule for one,err..no rule for the other. i call things as i see them...no rose coloured glasses here burgie |

I agree completely about the situation re: lipo sacks for charging, when nimih's which seem to like exploding have never been subjected to such a "safety measure".
I just happen to think name calling in such a manner of those who make the rules is not needed. |
but surely the velcro and stitching would catch fire wouldnt it?
just to appease you burgie i will ammend my post, doesnt change my thoughts tho on the rule makers. |

i havnt looked into them but i imagine they are similar material to firemens outfits and i reckon there stiching wont burn.
|
I think anyone can agree that if you mistreat either form of cell then bad things will happen, personally i see no need for a pouch but others do and those are the rules. I dont think it has been stipulated by the brca that a pouch must be used, i may be wrong, i think this is just a club/venue rule right now.

Oh sorry you mean a lipo pouch :woot: |

ah so its not an efra or brca ruling then? oh i thought it was a governing body ruling,my bad.
i dont see anything wrong with charging in a sack at all if it helps with safety should something go wrong, but lets be consistent and have nimh in a chargin box or something similair..preferably carbon fibre with tinfoil lining :) |

hmmm some interesting posts. My concern is that the EB advise but don't tell you to charge in a pouch, now clubs take it literally, so people are forced to used pouches. But there is no set standard for the pouches, and nothing to actually say, that they have been tested and would withstand a lipo going tits up. I appreciate in the event of a cell failure, it can reduce the damage to person or property too. But without a test procedure or them being constructed to guidelines, you can have one person with a pouch that is brilliant, and next to him, someone using a pouch made out of substandard material. So it then makes the procedure pointless.
And Like Dave points out, you open the can of worms when you allow other cells to be charged without ANY safety precautions at all. |
