removing old tyres
Im sure this has been covered before but i cant find the thread. Ive got loads of old schumacher 14mm hex wheels that I want to use again but the tyres are all old and perished but glued to the rims. Is there any thing to use to remove the old glue and tyres effectively? Apologies for repeating thread but cant find old one

99.9% acetone, sealed tub, cut off crap tyres leaving the edges (you can save the inserts) put a few of the cut off tyres in the bottom of the tub put wheels on top over night and the tyre walls will peel off leaving the wheels clean just from the acetone fumes 12-15 quid for 5 litres of acetone on eBay free delivery lasts for ages 👍

I just use an old source pan and some water, book them for 30 minutes then run them under cold water - cools the wheels and shocks the glue.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think ill try boiling them first before buying acetone. Some of the wheels are looking a bit grubby/stained Im aiming to get them looking nice and shiny

Hi, bought a steamer after being recommended on here.
No nasty chemicals or fumes, steam for an hour, pair of thick gloves and pliers, job done. Picked the steamer up for a tenner in the sales so cheap too! |

Hi,
No, it won't clean them up like acetone but the steam does give them a good wash!! |

I went down the acetone route. worked a treat disolving the old glue. Was hoping it would restore some of the discolouration to the rims but doesnt seem to have.
At the moment Im trying to restore old white nylon components from an old rc10. They are quite yellowed and discoloured. Any ideas of restoring or refreshing old wishbones etc? |

You could always change the colour of them?
What we all used to do with the original RC10 arms and wheels in the 80s was dye them with Dylon - a little pot of powder you used to get from haberdashers. Mine were bright orange, some other did theirs yellow and one guy did his all black for the stealth look. |

So boiling them with the tyres still attached for like 25 mins - 16 mins was a bad idea? It worked for like 2.5 out of 4 of my wheels|tyres but it wasn't great.
So - steam

Steaming is the best way
Buy yourself a bamboo steamer. Doesnt take long, only 20 mins. You can put about 4 wheels in each tray.Just be careful when taking the tyre off because they are red hot. Wear gloves.
It will also keep the wife happy because there is no real smell. |
