Lazer ZX front gearbox improved version
It fits the chassis and gearbox well, diff bearing tolerance is perfect. The gear box has been improved by adding material. Right now there are few errors.
1. The pinch roller space internally isnt big enough, i will fix it. 2. The outer nub that is for pinch roller clearance is too big causing the shock tower to interfere with gearbox, This sample can still be used by grinding that area. Again i will fix this. Best of all my selling price is much lower than oosh123 ones on shapeways, and you can buy the halves separately. For 1st purchase you need buy 2 halves because each half is not compatible with the originals. Last edited by alcyon; 17-02-2017 at 02:15 PM. |

Nice, my design idea is going in a totally different direction. The bushing on the top of the front gearbox isnt efficient so why not just remove that lump and make it all the same from left to right. Its a really good design as I can see you have added more strength. I cant see the top deck properly, but have you added a lip behind the back section so there isnt a gap between casing and top deck.

Looking good. I agree with James about doing away with the front roller and bump, both my vintage nylon front halves don't have that. If also means you can have a stronger front shock tower as the cutout is no longer required.
Once the gearbox design is locked in a custom front shock tower and upper deck that are a very tight fit would be the icing on the cake

Welshy the lip near the upper deck is to add extra material so that the tower is held in to the back by 4 screws not 2.
Dan, yes i can do that a gb without the roller. I will create another version but i will also offer the "original" version (with roller). I will upload on shapeways by sunday. Last edited by alcyon; 18-02-2017 at 05:31 AM. |

Yup, thats a pain but I suppose buying in bulk is a cheaper option.

Ok here it is
https://www.shapeways.com/product/SF65EQ3SF/la-32-f-m the rear half will be the same. So you have an option to buy the front half. The one without roller and one with. The link above is for non roller type. You would be advised to draw up new towers without the cuts. Wait for shapeways promos which could be as high as 20%. That would basically cut postage. |

thats a good design having the lip on back and front half of the gearbox so its bolted together with 4 screws.
should beef it up alot. mvh isobarik |

So welshy you want to try the gearbox ?
Now how are we going to solve the problem of the pulleys stripping, especially the rear pulley ? |

Not as easy as that, i want to get rid of those little splines which makes making the layshaft expensive and leaving the pulleys weak, a good choice would be optima mid style pin pulleys.

I have stripped protos made of weaker material but think having them made out of alloy would make a difference plus lengthening the inner spindles so its a stronger clamp onto the spindled section on the layshaft, as thats the weakest link in the drive train. I know tensioning correctly on the L brace and inside the gearbox results in minimising damages and works on my cf gearbox really well so would like to adapt my design into a 3d print of the standard gearbox for all to buy and feel confortable at putting in faster motors. But they do need to buy your layshaft to use the b4 slipper clutch as well. Ive got a cut out version in front of me now so dimensions arent too hard for one trnsioner to be added but may need a slight bulge on the gearbox.

Yes im in agreement, as mentioned above think extending the splines as well may aid it a bit.

Thanks cor your efforts Alcyon, I already have towers without the bump as I have two vintage front gearbox halves in nylon without the bump.
Would it be possible to make the gearbox case in alloy? Maybe we could send one to Pargu to copy

I've had it like this for 3 years now and still on origional gearbox casing . It's had a few bad knocks aswell! if this could be added into the design it would be spot on, adds load of strengthening. |

Dan, Shapeways also offers printing in alloy materials but the price isn't cheap and i have not worked out the tolerances yet. I spent a lot of time and money to adjust the bearing tolerances before I got it right. Its not as simple as putting a 14mm hole for a 14mm bearing. I had to compensate for shrinkage and those shapeways people didn't know squat about this. Welshy, i will send you this gearbox for you to test. I will check my old email for your address, I think no change of address ? If you have whatsapp we could stay in touch quicker. Right now we have a huge worldwide whatsapp group and Alex T.H and Dan Rowlands is in it. I have used 3D printed gearboxes on my Optima Mid and it took punishments well. I did crack a few rear GB earlier on, but I thickened and reinforced my designs and so far holding up. Last edited by alcyon; 21-02-2017 at 10:26 AM. |
