Default motor issues.

I have been having some trouble with over heating brushed motors.
I am running both a micro 1/18th buggy and a Carisma GT14, both with brushed motors and a cheap Maveric brushed esc.
So far I have broke 2 motors, the first one just stopped working and the one in the Carisma got so hot that it melted the rear motor casing.
I have checked the drivetrain on both cars and they are perfectly free running, both motors and esc's were brand new and the esc's still work even though the motors are completely wrecked.
Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong? I am not used to brushed set ups but I have been using brushless in my sct for many years with no issues. This is getting very frustrating and I would like to keep the standard brushed set up in the Carisma as we run a heat of them 'out of the box'
Any help would be great.
Ian

make sure your not overgeared(go smaller on pinion or bigger on spur) and fit a heatsink if you can
or drill some holes in the bodyshell to get some air in

Thanks.
The motor has a heat sink on it and it is geared as it was out of the box. lots of others are using the same car and motor set up with the same gearing with no problems but I am using a different esc. The one that came with it was a all in one rx + esc but I want to use my own radio so I had to chage both. It does seem to be the esc causing the problems but why? Is it possible that if I am using the wrong amp esc it could damage the motor?

The only way the esc would do this is, if it was supplying more amps to the motor than the std one
the std esc is probably a lot lower rated at the amps it supplys to the motor

It sounds like that could be the problem, thanks for that.

Are you running lipos or nimhs? What tyres do you have on the gt14? Rubbers or foams (presume you're talking about the gt14 tourer since this comes with a brushed motor out of the box)

Its is on the standard rubber tyres and I have been running mostly lipo but tried it on nimh and it still get dangerously hot.
May end up going brushless but would rather not as we run a heat of stock brushed which is very close racing.

Are you meshing the gears too tight?

What are the specs of the stock and your new ESC? (Maximum and continuous current?)
Might be worth restricting peak current (or estimating using your end points, if the ESC isn't that programmable) on the new one.
