Hobbywing 120A V3.1 Set Up issues
Hello all,
I've just installed a new Hobbywing 120A V3.1 , wired up , and am unable to either get into set up mode or to set it up . When holding the button down on the ESC the red light continually flashes and ESC beeps continuously , fist thing , is this right that it goes on continually ? or is something already wrong . I don't have the set up box so am only setting up with the ESC itself . So, assuming the above is correct , I'm pressing in neutral , holding at full speed , then press , full brake then press etc . When I do this , the beeping and light stop , but the green light never lights and the set up does not complete . Servo works fine and battery voltage from a 7.4v 5500 saddle is around 8.5 volts , motor is a Thunder Power 8.5 . Any help appreciated Peter |

Continual beep can mean short circuit, bad phase rotation or other fault, try other motor, battery and get a set up box anyway

Is it possible to overtighten the timing screws on the motor? would this have any effect?

charged batteries?
ABC correct? Sensor wire in? binded radio to RX does the servo work? |

Sounds like it doesn't "like" the radio inputs that it sees. Does it confirm (with the beeps) after each stage - i.e after you set neutral and full throttle??
Some radios also need to be reversed in their settings to work with some ESC's.

Agree with Matt, whatever direction the throttle stick is now, reverse it on your radio and try again. Make sure that you are at 100% stick throw for both forward and brake. HTH

ok
Hi,
Onekiwi , everything ok and 40 mHz system being used . Reversing the channel made sense , but I've tried it and it's the same . It seems it can't be set to work / run without the set up card , unless anyone knows how . But thanks for the replies , |

I recently had this problem with the G-Force 1s esc, it turned out to be my receiver that was causing the problem of not calibrating.
Radio was a Ko Propo Mars R 40meg. Stelios |

To confirm his radio and servo all work fine

You need the setup card to change any settings, but you don't need it to set it to the radio.

hmmm
All very interesting , no idea on calibrating or if this is needed , but as per Mark servo works and is happy .
I am a dab hand at having brushless systems that refuse to work , my latest effort lol So Matt, you're saying it should definitely set up without the card or any other paraphernalia , purely the button on the ESC? curiouser and curiouser I'm not sure I'm setting to the radio , I'm just wanting to have the motor turn for the first time ideally , not interested in fancy settings, just want the car to move under it's own power... So from what I'm told , it's not possible without either the top or the basic set up card... |

100% - the very first thing (once all mounted) is that you have to set it to the radio. When you do that, it will be in the default mode - which is mode 1 "modified".
You need to be doing steps 3,4 on page 2 of the manual - put it into set mode, set neutral, set full throttle, set full brake : Or the slightly more detailed instructions of step 2 on page 4. http://www.hobbywing.com/uploadfiles...W-SM510ENG.pdf If you aren't setting it to the radio, then it's fair to expect it not to do anything. You only need the setting box to change settings, not to set it to radio and make it work.

Ok thanks , no it won't set any of the 'points' as per first post, all that happens, when you press the first 'point', is the continual flashing red / beeping stops

stupid thought here
does the 3.1 have external switch for power or the one located on the ESC ? if its the external switch you have to hold down calibation button as you switch on to get into calibration mode if its the one located on the esc itself i think you have to hold "power" button in as you plug in battery to access calibration mode im not 100% sure and you may already know or be doing this just another avenue to try if you hadnt thought about it or done it best wishes Dave |

Does it calibrate on the steering channel?
Are all your end points/dual rates/travel on your TX set to 100 or full, trims centre, etc?

Just to satisfy your curiosity customer came in to the shop with his car for me to have a go at sorting it out.
Turns out it was the radio. I put one of mine in and all was ok!
