Default Old Newbie....

Hi All,

Looking to take up the hobby after a 17 year absence!!!.

Just about got my head around all this new tech you have (what happened to 1800 cells???!!!).

Issue is what car, or rather what chassis as they all seem samey - perhaps I'm wrong?.
'in the day' I raced a modified Lazer ZX then a ZX-R and did rather well.

What car now? Is 4wd still popular or is it all 2wd drive now?

So a general Q - what Car/Motor/Tyre combo works well and is popular?

Look forward to a few replied.

Thanks Neil

Hi, and welcome, car? depends on budget 2wd cheaper to run and maintain, 4wd because winters coming, you really do want a brushless system plus li-po batts + charger. One of the guy's just bought a brushless motor and ESC new for about £65 from HK.
2wd Car choice !!! Schumacher Couger, AE b4.1, I know there are others but these are the most common and when you need spares there's usually someone else with them.
4wd Schumacher cat SX, AE b44, Durango dex410, and kyosho lazer fs/fs2, not forgeting Tamiya durga, Tamiya TRF511.
It's about a 50/50 split with class sometimes more 2wd other time more 4wd.
Any questions please ask.

Thanks Wylie,

A great help. I'd like to stick to 4WD as its what I know (or knew!!).

I'm think the Associated 4wd RC10 b4.1 or the Schummy Cat SX with suitable LiPo Cells and ESC.

I'll be going for a 2.4ghz stick controller though can do this wheel stuff

Do you race 10th Short Course???

Not seen a short course truck down the track yet.
Don't discount the Durango 410r and also the AE b4 4.1 is a 2wd buggy
the 4wd is the b44.
This section is a bit slow as not all of the members use the internet as a means of chatting or sharing info. Shame really as there so helpfull.

How are you matey.
Come and see me you old tart......

Oh! Get yourself a Kyosho FS2 and never look back.
Loads of people stock spares (although doesn't break) and it's real good.

Hi Neil

Basically what Wylie said!!

If you are going 4WD, I would suggest there are probably most Schumacher SXs at the club by a small margin although there are quite a few people trying the Durango cars now and several Tamiya cars, couple Kyosho cars, Losi, Associated and now one Caster car. Whilst they might all look a bit "samey", there is actually a fair bit of choice - currently got single belt and dual belt cars, shaft drive cars and the durango has geared diffs - all with their own benefits. It's almost impossible to get unbiased advise as so many people will tell you their car is best for whatever reason but if you have raced before then I am sure you know that.

I would normally suggest that you pop down and have a look at a few cars in the flesh. Unfortunately as we are re-building the track there is a bit of a break in racing for probably at least another couple of weeks (weather is not helping). We are track building most sun mornings at the moment so if you want to pop down for a chat, I'm sure we will be glad of the break!! If you let us know you are coming down, I am sure a few of us would bring our cars slong so you can have a look.

Tyres - in the dry schumacher mini-spikes on the rear (I run blues but think some run yellows) and thin staggered ribs on front (they are meant for 2WD but seem to work on our track. In the wet, ballistic mini-spikes in either pink or green (pinks are softer and will wear out quicker but give a bit more grip) on the back and either schumacher or ballistic mini-spikes on front. Tyres and inserts are normally available for sale trackside.

We do not currently run the short course trucks - sure we could run a heat if there was enough interest but I'm not aware there is much interest at the moment so you are probably better off getting a buggy so at least you can be sure of a race.

Hope to see you at the track soon

Rob

Crossed posts with Tony but see what I mean about unbiased views on cars

Of course Tony is right about the FS2 - I bought one about a month ago - first 4WD buggy in about 20 years.

Hi,

Welcome and look forward to meeting you

Indeed wide selection of cars around these days and I'm testing a few at the moment, but by no means the quickest so don't listen to me!

I think I'd prob go FS2, even though I'm about to test a Durango.. My FS has taken a pretty big roll the other week and the only thing I've got is a bent shock scew. Even been racing with a crack front bulkhead and it still was fine..

I've run a SX for a year + and enjoyed it. Steve Brown runs a Cat SX and Durango 410R, but he's fast whatever he's running. No one can challenge him in 4WD at present.

Re short course trucks, if we have enough we'd run a heat. I may even get a Durango SC!

Track work is ongoing and hard at the mo, so may be quite a few weeks

Regards,

Mike

Thanks for the help guys Confused.com!

Looks like I might opt for 2wd now as they seem to have the biggest fields of racers.

My 10 year old also wants to start, reckons he could be better than his old man was .

Tony, you got a PM

Popped into a shop in Wokingham today and would seem the Cougar or the Assc B4.1 are fav's....

Can't go wrong with either of those IMHO.

2WD is cheaper too

We'll get the track done and Tony can come down and race!

Were abouts are you based, I assume it was MK you visited? I haven't been there yet, but Marc's never let me down via his online store.

I'm based in Farnham, Surrey, so this and Taplow would be my local tracks.

I'm also in dialog with both my sons school about using school grounds for either a pack away or perm track

Talk about running before walking!!!!

I'm drawn to the Cougar at present. Why? Well my son wants the same as me, but I dont want to shell out loads on his. So my thinking is a Cougar RTR and a Pro one for me!.

Well, that's the plan as of 19.10 tonight!!! - could all change!.

Finally got my head around it all though.... Quite happy to spec gadgets now

SV is a popular car at our track and I run one. Love my SV, but it doesn't quite have the bullet proof aspect of the B4s.

There isn't a ready to run SV, just the cheaper S1, but it doesn't have big bore shocks. Considered a 2nd hand one for your son?

There you go you see, someone else told me the SV was tougher than the B4

The B4 does come in RTR so that could makes sense, I just do not want his track time being cut short with repairs.

Cant do 2nd hand, Mr Santa is bringing this one!!!!

Sorry to confuse. I have had good racing with my SV.

I would be happy with either.

Nope on both accounts. Fs2 for example is tub like and sv is flat. B4 is tub and b44 flat.
