Acording to previous threads, no as it relies on 'line of sight' infared or something...

first of all, glad you can see the pic, and secondly, I'm told to tie it to my shoe, so it could be right.

it obviously has no wires or power supply to attach it, how is it powered?

Used for running races.

Also used a similar one for 24hour bike races, although you had to get off the bike and walk over the loop.

Tie it to your shoe? Is it for running? Maybe kinetic energy then...

I think a previous poster may have confused Mylaps (formerly Amb) with I-Laps which is a infra red system
still dont know how it works tho

maybe its the "force" (Luke)

It works by pretty much the same system as those magnetic tags in the shops do.
The technology could be applied to RC cars, but as pointed out it needs to be really close to the ground, and an ideally needs a fairly slow passing over speed. Also, the race control hardware is even more expensive than current AMB/Mylaps RC systems so whilst PT's are cheap, its not ideal.

It probably works over induction. You have a loop of wire with which you come close to a power source and it provides the power for the chip inside, like RfID access cards used for building access etc.
