I was windering if the TRF201 will be driven with normal 4WD Front tires (since they are recommended by Tamiya)? Has anybody got information if the 51414 TRF201 Front Dish wheels is designed for 4WD Front tyres or for 2WD Front tyres (as the slim one from Schumacher are)???

I wanted to order tyres from the UK but i am unsure wether to buy 4WD Fronts or Slim (2WD Fronts).

Anybody?

simoncrabb
24-04-2010, 12:37 PM
They're be 'normal' width - the 2wd and 4wd width is the same.

You can use them with wide or narrow 2wd tyres - just mount them differently, you may need to trim some of the wheel off.

muratti
24-04-2010, 12:42 PM
Thanks, this means i can use both (for example Schumacher) normal Mini Spike Front Tyres (4WD) and Mini Spike Tyres Slim? What do you mean with trimming some of the wheel off? What do most people tend to use on their b44 and Kyoshos or does it only depend on the soil you run on? Wide Fronts if soil is loose and slim ones if traction is high on packed clay or something?

Yes, you could use either of those on the wheel. Or staggered ribs.

There's not much racing here on dirt, mainly astro, so rarely wide tyres are seen on the front of a 2wd.

Chopping of the wheel, I mean this bit, the bit in red, on the inside of the wheel, you end up with a narrow wheel ideal for narrow front 2wd tyres.

i think the body gives the clearance for just about any speedo combo, but personally i think you should all have Speed passions in your cars anyway, not only is the performance superior, but the blue coating matches the Tamiya blue anodizing..............!

Europe always gets TRF kits first, usually 3-4 weeks before Japan and Asia, as long as the distributor has ordered the cars in time. This has been the case for 4-5 years already and is a Tamiya strategy to help the European distributors compete with Asia.

HK will most likely get the kits a few days before Japan, but still middle/end of June time.

Kits for Europe will likely be sent from Tamiya last week of May...

Carno

a Tamiya strategy to help the European distributors compete with Asia.

Smarter strategy for the European distributors would be to not ask ridiculous prices for the products.

So many shops and esp. the LHS here ask ridiculous prices for the kits.
If you order something from Asia and can save like €50 or more even when charged with import taxes and shipping you start wondering where those €50 come from.

I understand people have to make a living. but if you can save 50 euro on an amount of 250.

Found a German webshop that asks decent prices for kits though. Was looking at the TB-03R kit to replace my old TA-03 and compared the prices with Hong kong and including 19% tax the price was nearly identical.

Classic example was the old Dutch distributor that sold the Volac ESC (rebadged Sphere TC€240) for €350 :bored:

The unfortunate fact is that within the EU distributors have to cope with things like the following:

- VAT (about 15-25% depending on the country)
- High shipping costs from Asia (think 20-30%!) if you want it delivered within a reasonable timeframe. These costs are constantly rising as well...
- constantly changing Yen exchange rate which is today @ 122 when it was @ ~165 under 2 years ago (do your maths and you notice a 35% change - has Japanese products you buy risen 35% in 2 years?)
- high costs for employing people
- etc.

Those are the unfortunate facts. Still, if the customer can buy the same product considerably cheaper from Asia and have it at his home within a week, of course he will! So European distributors and shops naturally have to try to compete with Asia, USA AND Europe today. But the distributor is not there to lose money. If that's what's demanded to sell cars then he will in the long term most probably stop selling that car before it makes his company go bankrupt. So we end up with a situation where there is no distributor selling that car.

Just a somewhat simplified example to show it's a more complex situation than most think. Of course some chose to sell the cars with very little or no profit just because they're Tamiya fanatics :)

It's not simple I know. But comparing prices on the internet is.
I bought my Durga for €200 from a dutch webshop that isn't even specialised in RC. My LHS was offering one for €260.

Even within the EU the prices vary to much. People have to make a living. But apparently some people are just not good at it and lose clients cause they ask to much.

If you want people to buy the car in european shops. Tell your retailers to maintain a uniform price (where possible) and to stock parts.
That way they'll get and keep customers.
Don't think releasing a car two weeks earlier in europe will solve much.

rear wheels are standard 2wd pin fitment.

fronts are tamiyas, unless you get
54220 TRF201 Front Axle (For 3/16” x 3/8” Bearings)
which apparently you can use B4 rims, its likely, however not confirmed if they are for B4 rims. Sorry I could not be more definite!

If you look at the piucs in this link there is a TRF201 pictured that has the Tamiya tyres fitted along with a esc and side by side NiMh batteries just as Tamiya does with all their cars. So i really don´t think that this is a team driver´s car BUT it shows HL cylinders that´s why i think it will come with HL cylinders as stock.

Slightly OT but that Tamiya Drift chassis looks fantastic..

Tamiya usually show a spec car, and then show a full spec one next to it with the hop-ups on display. (like the drift car)

The TRF201 seems to have all the nice parts fitted on all of the versions so I would hope that means they are included.

the HL dampers and titanium turnbuckles ARE included! I confirmed this with the designer of the buggy as well as internally.
The "random" springs on the 511 are whatever springs that Marc Rheinard ran on the car at the Euros as the car is the winning buggy from last year
Tamiya USA is bundling the body and wing with the kit, so in the U.S. they will come together

Hope this helps! Finally, here are some new part images.

I will never buy Acer ceramic bearings again I put them in my 501x and they are garbage. Buy Bocca or some other kind but not Acer.
Apparently thier customer service is pretty poor too.
$89.00 for bearings and they are not worth 10 cents!

Hobby Co did bring in some TRF511's last year but they were so pigging expensive they couldn't shift them! We had 3 off them on a deal price tail end of last year and sold all of them after the Pettit (most of the local club racers snapped them up). For some reason TRF's over here (aside from the 501's we had back in 07) don't seem to come with bodies, but as Spud says, the body for the 201 will be £20 and the wing set £10.

Body and wing im still undecided in colors to paint it. Us americans get the body and wing in the kit. :)
But I might just paint the body metallic blue and the wing metallic black to match my 501x.
Leave the wing sides clear like the picture and paint the inside black.

I didnt buy it from tower just my LHS here in town matches tower's price for me. :)
Tower has it for $339, my lhs said $329 so they did knock off $10 for me.

What is the part number for the new ball cups that only team drivers has access to?

I can only find tamiya #51283 reinforced ball cups for the 501x as these are the only reinforced ball cups from tamiya I can find, but looked at some online sites and it says the item was added to their site in 2007. Surely its not these are they?

edit.....51283 came with the db01, so the reinforced ball cups are still crap

want to build another tamiya, but with some quality tamiya ball cups, not like their crap that is included in the 501 and db01 kits that strip ball cups pretty easy. And not going the 4.3mm tc5/hb/losi/rpm route again.

I've been running mine virtually every week this year and I haven't popped a single one of the "crap" ones, or bent them. I am beginning to think it was a batch that had a problem, last summer the ones I had bought the previous spring were rubbish and kept popping, but my kits and spares bought in the autumn are fine.

I think they had a bad batch of 416 arms at the same time, so am wondering if they had a plastics issue for a while...

RRP/SRP with body and wing is £330 (OMfG)....for what is basically a B4FT with a Tamiya sticker on it.

What makes the 201 £125 more expensive than the B4FT then??

If each car was hand delivered by Pidge, who then came into your house and helped build it I could understand...but £330 seems stupidly OTT pricing imo.

Has anyone designed a mid conversion for it yet?

Has someone confirmed the 201 defintely comes with good quality ballstuds and not the made of cheese 511 ones?

Love those rear hubs, the K ones look funky, looks like more expense sigh!! Good tuning tip though, my 511 was awesome indoors on sloppy stuff except needing more traction out of corners, hoping these will help!?

Bodies and shafts are the same as the 511 Alec front and rear. HL cylinders and gold shafts as std with the 201. The front spring kit has a different part number to the 511 front spring kit though - rear spring kit is the same :)

None of the shops on KWS in Mong Kok, HK, have stock yet. They were expecting them in from the distributor this Friday but I guess delivery has been pushed back another week. They're a bit vague about the price, but apparently somewhere around HKD1900.

Titanium screws are a option.
Those that come with the kit may not be cross head screws, but probably are not a very good quality either.

Never seen a TRF with philips screws? 511 has 4 (that secures hinge pins on each suspension arm) but rest of them are hex. Same on 201.

511 screws are better than the ones that came with the 501X.
I´ve have not had any problem with them.

TKG26

Those are kit screws, black steel hex screws. The kit uses 8 tiny philips screws to capture hing pins. The lighting makes those screws look stainless but they are not.

DCM
17-06-2010, 01:34 PM
And thats why, after years and years of running Tamiya, I just don't bother trying to get the stuff in the UK, as Hobby Co tells the shops, we don't stock it as we don't sell the kits, but then the kits are then over priced and always gets here late, so people buy overseas, then whilst they are at it, fill up on spares, ship it and still pay less than the kit in the UK.

I feel sorry for the likes of Mark Knight, who is desperately trying to promote TRF in the UK, only to have the one company who should be helping, turn and kick them in the bollocks.....

WELL DONE HOBBY CO!!

Now why doesn't that surprise me?
Don't hobby co ship their stuff in container by sea now, hence the looooooooong delays?

If they're not interested in supporting the TRF side of things why oh why can't they let someone else import it?

well they have not sent mine yet. What they do is, like other companies do, give you a tracking number, and wait for their courier to pick it up and take it to the post office. It could take another 24hrs until your package gets picked up.

I hope your package gets stuck in customs haha

Yes, it comes in a container, which is put on one of them dodgy Hong Kong fishing boats, I think, and then goes the long way round...

The man who runs Hobby Co is a good friend to Mr Tamiya, and the way the Japanese do business, he gets it, careless. There were rumours that the R/C side of it was to be split off, but that's died now. If shops are pissed off, then another way around this issue, is to import from the likes of Stellamodels, and RCMart, yes they will discount and sell to shops, so you would get the items far sooner, and be able to order stock without a possible 8 week delay.

Yes, Customs, if the value is over a certain amount, then we get hit for customs.

looking at that, I can use the DB01 rear arms and hubs on the back, if I am in need, excellent!! And B4 size spur gears!!

Hadn't seen the fancy bearings were included too, there's loads more standard in this than the 511, good stuff!

I got so many 501x spares. All I'll have to stock on the car is front A-arms. And spares for the front end.
I have eveything else.
