Noise Cancelling Headphones
Hi All,
Im looking for some decent noise cancelling headphones for use at home, but also on planes. I really want them to take away the drown of the engines. I have found a few which may fit the bill, but interested to hear others views of these and any others which are decent. Have you considered ear bud earphones? For that price you can get some quite good ones. Admittedly some are better at blocking noise than others, but depending on the design you can get a really good seal in the ear which keeps music in and noise out.
Some people find such earphones quite invasive which I can understand, but they are effective. A good pair can be as comfortable or possibly more comfortable than ear phones. I have some Klipsch X10's which I'm really happy with, although as it happens not the best for noise blocking.

Unfortunately i cannot wear inner ear ones as i get issues with wearing them. I was choosing the over ear as i want to be able to put in ear plugs if necessary if i want to sleep on longer flights.

Another thing to consider when spending on good headphones is whether your source is powerful enough to power them adequately? There is nothing worse than an underpowered amp with really good speakers, so it's the same principle. You can get mini battery powered amps specifically for such applications which may be something you would need to look into.
I would recommend AVForums, there are some very knowledgeable people on there who would be happy to advise. I'd imagine the question has been asked before anyway though. For what it's worth, my cans at home are Beyerdynamic and I've always been pleased with the quality of those - although these particular ones aren't noise cancelling.

i purchased some a while back from lidl and they were only £8 reduced and blocked everything, nearly got me run over a few times though,

I'd seek advice from an audiophile forum if you want objective opinion; you're specifically after advice on noise-cancelling headphones that'll work and actively cancel noise even when you're not listening to anything in particular.
I looked into a few years ago when I was flying regularly and looked at proper BOSE noise cancelling headphones - but they'd be at least double your budget. But if you have tinnitus and really want to protect your ears when flying then you may consider it worthwhile. As an alternative, you could have some proper/professional earplugs made; would involve have a cast made of your ears and then plugs moulded from that. As an alternative you could look at getting proper ear defenders such as Peltor. Try somewhere like avforums for advice on active noise cancelling headphones, perhaps?

If you want bang for buck checkout the goldring ns1000
Really awesome cans, cheap as chips too. I've tried these out and they are just as good as my Sennheiser Hd580's. There is loads of info on AVforums http://www.avforums.com/forums/headp...ni-review.html

I did a lot of research before buying my Bose noise-canceling headphones which were consistently the best in tests. I have not regretted it for a minute. I've also lent them to others, some with other N-C designs, and most people don't want to give them back!!
The Bose headphones have a selectable impedance switch, which means you can 'adjust' them to your sound source. They come with a whole range of adaptors which have not failed to get me connected in any aircraft, old or new. The little battery runs for an age, the 'cans' (over ear) are comfortable and the hoop very adjustable. The only reason I know I am wearing them is I can't hear anything else except the sound coming in! If you disconnect the sound source they keep you quiet, and I find them comfortable enough to sleep in a cattle class seat. HTH
