Masking
Hi Guys
Been thinking of having a go at this spraying lark for awhile now a couple of questions. Whats the easyest way of doing a semetrical design ? And how do you go about doing thin out lining round windows or the design is it all done free hand ? if it is how do you get nice clean lines that are all the same width !! Will need a compressor and airbrush but think i'll just use rattle cans for the first attempt to see how i get on with doing the masking. Is there anywhere to get cheapo bodyshells to practice on don't fancy paying £15-£20 for a shell to practice Cheers |

I do all my shells with liquid mask. The easiest way to get the design symetrical is to design one side in permanent marker then use greaseproof paper to transfer it to the other side. Pinstripes are hand cut... use a good quality blade, don't press to hard and take your time! Mostly its all about practice.
Jon at RCS has a good tutorial on his site that you should check out. |

would advise against using paint cans Paul - they will lay down the paint too heavy and cause bleeding under the mask.
My advice : get yourself some reasonable kit if you're serious about doing it - this isn't something where you can get good results on the cheap. Then, decide on a decent, but simple design and talk it through with one of your race buddies who paints -me, Shilly, Mike Parker ... you're spoilt for choice in NE. Sure we'd all be happy to advise., but do make sure you have your approach set out, or it will not go as well as it could do. Thx Andy

Hi Paul.
Until this summer - I used a Tamiya Spraywork. It's a gun and compressor that runs off a 7.2 v battery. I have 2 of them and still use one to spray RCS body prep onto shells before painting them. If you can find one - it's a cheap, decent bit of kit to start with. If I can find all the bits for my 2nd one you could have it for not much Compressors are expensive - unless you want to wear ear defenders. I treated myself to a Bambi and it's ace. I've also bought various airbrushes off eBay - with varying results. A few have gone in the bin ! If you need anything let me know. Oh - and practice on the inside of cut open pop bottles |
