giving racing a go.....what do i need?

i used to race at club level 15-20 years ago. for christmas i got my son an Electrix Ruckus truck, partly because it looks bullet proof and so he can havde a bit more fun.

i've noticed that there is a club just down the way from us (eden park raceway) and fancied giving it a go again.

what sort of stuff do we/he need to get racing? when i raced i had an rc10 (no other numbers after it!) and a couple of 1700 stick packs.....roughly one for each heat and one for the final. i have two batteries for his truck but think i'd need another two as i dont have a 12v battery or field charger

i gather things have changed a bit and could do with a bit of help.(also fgor me getting involved)

Any one of the many rtr race quality buggies, handful of spares (depending on which car you get), one or two lipos, decent charger, couple of sets of wheels/tyres.

That should get you started.

Best off finding out what everyone else races at the club you are going to race at before you choose your car, gives you a lot more access to spares and set up/driving tips. Also, check the tyre of choice for the track.

They might even have a class for the truck, in which case, you just need spares and suitable wheels/tyres. And a charger.

And at least 2 sets of wheels/tyres, best to get advice from the club regarding these.

This'll get you a quality, built to race buggy. Parts available to run it mid motor (better on high grip tracks) if/when desired. As said though, you might want to find out what is popular at the club as having others around you who race the same car can be invaluable for spares, set up advice etc.

It is best to speak to the guys at the club or find a local model shop who can help. There are a couple around the London area depending on where you live. My advice is buy from a uk shop who can give good advice, nothing worse than buying abroad and not having the support when it goes wrong... For the extra few pounds the advice/support is invaluable.

Ok so me and my son had a blast round Eden park raceway and met with some very friendly chaps and got to try out his monster truck on a proper track.

More batteries have been ordered, but I'm also wondering......does it really matter what sort of car you are racing or is it primarily the driver input that gets you results?

I have my eye on a losi XXX on eBay for myself that looks like it comes with a load of tuning parts (tyres and springs mostly) is this type of car seriously off the pace or not suited to current types of tracks?

car does make a diffrence but there is no reason why a old car cant give good results in our hands but i would go for something a little newer that can handle brusless and lipos

if you have the money i would suggest a durango 210 rtr loads of car for the money

Older cars certainly will serve well until you get up to speed, and then progress your skills.
However the main concern i see often is when you break the car and dont carry that particular spare, no one will have this part in their box - normally if you ask, people will loan spares.
In this case it would be game over.

Ideally if i were you i would wish to run a car others at my local club would run, advice, help and support is always there and you wont be left wondering what to do.

So I ordered the durango dex210 in the end. Waiting for it to arrive.

I also got myself an imax b6 charger and two 4000mah 20c lipo batteries. Should this be enough to get going with? Chatting with a few people seemed to suggest that you can get 2-3 races out of each lipo depending on the motor.......is that about right?

Oh and ordered some green mini spike tyres too as it's an AstroTurf track

Hello Stuart, I was one of those chaps at Eden Park! The greens are a good all rounder, we generally use yellows in the dry and silvers in the wet. I started on greens and it was fine.

You should be fine with the batteries too, I've only got 2 packs of lipos and Ive always got through meetings ok.
