Sorry I'm so dense, Mike, maybe it's the drugs I'm still on.

Why would you use the saddle chassis to move weight inboard, then put brass as far outside as possible? I see the brass is gone in all but the top pic,

No problem, was for a track that was really slippy and bumpy so used the rear corner weights to give abit more roll on the rear and a little extra drive and stability over the bumps which made for postive results on my times

Ofcourse it has my usual elaborate paint scheme, but despite that I think it still looks ace
That looks awesome, I am an avid VW fan besides rc racer, so I want to go this route too. Do you have a shot from below, showing how the body follows the chassis outline?

It really doesnt follow the chassis outline in the front. You'll need to make a dust protector for that.

They are still great cars. Make sure the belt is running perfectly straight and don't use a motor much faster than 7.5 (10.5 preferred) and you'll do fine. Bigger motors simply overpower the driveline. It was designed with 11 doubles and 3300 NiMh batteries...

We still love the old nail -- it's very fast in the stock class or 19-T (10.5). A privateer took the stock motor Championship in Australia last year. He says, "when it's right she drives and handles like a dream."

Make sure you have several belts -- they're not all that expensive. At home, strip the rear suspension & bones, and pop the front camber link so the bones are out. Leave the motor in the car. Now pull the bottom cover and run the car. Shim the idler pulley in or out until the belt is running perfectly in the center. Especially around the front pulley, Dremel away anything that causes rubbing.

If you are using the Losi belt, use the xx-4 pulley set. If you are using our pulleys, (much better ratio) let us know and we will help you get a belt that fits those teeth.

Believe it or not, I'm still running the original oOple review car http://www.oople.com/rc/photos/reviewx5/index.html
The car has had the squared update and runs a stick Lipo, other than that its pretty stock. I can honestly say in approx 5yrs with the car I have done only 2 belts, and one of those snapped clean in half within 20m of setting off, so was almost certainly a faulty one.
I still love the car and I don't believe an average driver like me would be much faster with anything else.

People tend to forget that the X - 5 was ROAR National Champion in 2005, its first year on the market. And Ellis put his in the A at almost every National in 2009, if not every one. It's not like there has been a revolution in 4WD since then.

One of our problems designing the X - 7 is to make it faster than the X - 5. We don't know of a suspension better than the xx-4/X - 5. Great on bumps, super in the air, and corners well. Most important, easy for the average racer to drive fast and consistent. And the single belt system is so efficient. Very hard to make a car significantly faster than an X - 5.

We're working on it...

Nice action shot, Mike.

My last spec X5 sits quite proudly on my shelf, just next to the original prototype X6 Chris Long and I had for initial testing. Maybe one day I'll get her out for old times sake.

Josh, I'm rather biased about the X - 6 Squared. What I can tell you is that Ellis won the BRCA Championship two years in a row with it, then tied for the Championship last year (He finished second on the tie-breaker.). So that's very similar to three in a row.

Every club racer who drives it says it's soo easy to drive fast, and most report 1/2 - 3/4 second/lap faster right from the beginning. Many move up a main immediately they switch. That's them talking, not me. Check out the Fan Mail on our web site.
