Default Beginner Electrics

Hi All,

Im just starting again after a 6/7 year break, and im really struggling with what to buy. Basically, i need - ESC, Motor, Servo, and LiPos. Ill be racing 1/10 touring cars on carpet at club level, in the 17.5 class.

I dont want to spend too much to begin with, but im happy spending abit more money so i dont have to upgrade straight away if i decide to take it further.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Get down the club or clubs you're going to be racing at most regularly and see what the others are running, see what's working for them, best advice from the people you'll be racing along side.

Default Electrics needed

Best thing to do as ever is ask around at your local club see what everybody's running.

My 4p worth -

ESC, Tekin RS or RS pro both are sensored and have great software support from the manufacturer.

17.5 Bl motor - much are pretty identical in performance but I would go for the Corally.

Li-Po's - I would buy new, anything over 5000mah capacity and rated at over 50C discharge. 2nd hand can be a lottery ( buy from someone you know if you do ).

Servo - Savox 1351MG, low profile, digital, fast and reliable

The good news is that there is a lot of good stuff out there. If you are looking for stuff that will last and will be competitive in most classes, I would be looking at...

ESC - Hobbywing has been the best value for a while (Xerun and Xtreme Stock sensored range) but availability is patchy at the moment. There is a V3 Xerun which has come out but the price is not the bargain it was. If you shop around you should find the Speed Passion versions of the same range of speedos at pretty good prices (the GT and LPF). There are lots of other brands, most of them more expensive, none of them any better than the Hobbywing-based ESCs. HPI will be re-badging the Xerun V3 in the near future.

Motor - HPI Flux Pro is a bargain. Most of the other BRCA legal motors are quite similar, but I would definitely buy one of the motors with adjustable timing.

Servo - You will get a lot of recommendations for the Savox range. It's not my recommendation, they are very power hungry and that can cause problems for the rest of your electrics. A Futaba BLS551 (or S9551) is an excellent touring car servo that will give years of service. Sanwa are a good brand too but rather expensive. I wouldn't waste your money on the £30 "high-performance" servos, they are often pretty ropey, you're better off with a standard Futaba 3003 (which is a pretty decent servo for a slower car anyway)

LiPo - there are very few bad LiPo's out there. The BRCA list is a good place to start, otherwise just look out for a hard case. C ratings are basically made up by the manufacturers now, anything with 5000mAh and 50C+ rating is going to be pretty recent and should be a good cell. I have mostly used IP cells (or rebranded versions of them). One pack should be enough for a days racing if there is time to charge it between rounds, no need for multiple packs like we used to have in the NiMH days.

You're looking at £250+ for that set of electrics. That may seem expensive, but that is the minimum I would invest in electrics to last.

There are cheaper ways of doing it - buy a £100 17.5 combo from one of the manufacturers, stick with the standard servo, and buy a cheaper, lower capacity LiPo - but these might not give you the same level of performance or as many years service.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replys, what do people think about the following?

ESC - Speed Passion Reventon S (R and S seem the same with R being able to cope with faster motors?)

Motor - HPI Flux 17.5

Servo - Savox 1257

Thanks

Hi,

We run 1/10 off road in Deanshanger every Wednesday. You should come along and have a chat with some of the guys who also run touring cars. A lot of the electrics are the same between cars as well.

Personally I'd look for a Hobbywing Xtreme stock, HPI Flux is fine but go for the Savox 1251. The low pro servo will fit a TC better and mine has been flawless. I also rate Futaba servos but they are expensive new.

The hobbywing distributor has recently changed. The shops will have them shortly.

the best advice as always is go along to your local club as see what is popular (this advice has already been made so follow it )

dont discount second hand equipment either there are some good sellers on here you could pick up decent speedo, servo, and motor for less than £100 i personally have only bought 1 new lipo (maybe i have been lucky or just bought from good guys )

I love hobbywing ESC any motor (sensored will suffice at newbie level i have some very cheapies and the perform more than adequately

regards dave
