Default Basic Lipo questions

From days of yore when I used to used NiCads and you had to treat them with the reserve and care normally only usually bestowed upon the likes of the Crown Jewels I wondered if someone could help me with some answers and any other tips regarding Lipos.

What is the general care of Lipos - tips tricks, does and dont's etc?

What is the difference between balance charging and fast charging?

Can they be charged the night before a race or is it best to only charge them on the day?

Do they need to be fully discharged?

Which brands appear to be the best?

And any no-no's I should be aware of?

Anything else?

I appreciate these are simple questions but any advice is welcomed?

Thanks in advance

do use a lipo charger, dont discharge below 3 volts per cell (7.4 is 2 cells) so 6 volt min, store them with charge in them, a good charger will have a storage mode, but fully charged, do a 5 min run and store is ok. do not discharge prior to charging

fast charge charges the pack, balance charge charges each cell and balances the voltage, still does it fast, but an unbalanced pack can take longer to charge fully.

yes thay can be charger the night before

no need to discharge

suprizingly nearly all the cells come from the same factoy, pick a good branded name i will recomend vapextec, good cells and brca approved

do not short circuit, do not discharge below 3v per cell, do not leave em plugged into your car as some systems will slowly discharge the pack, do not use a non lipo charger, do not puncture the cell

stick to above and buy a lipo charge sack as its a brca requiremnet

Dont take this as gospel as there are many people that know far more about it than myself, but as a rule i do the following

Balance charge whenever possible as a 7.4v lipo is 2 cells balance charging will maintain both cells are charged the same usually to around 4.2v per cell.

I usually balance charge the day before, then top them up on race day.

NEVER fully discharge a lipo this will cause permenant damage to the cells.

Brands as with many things tend to be much of a muchness, you can get cheaper packs that do the job just fine. If you go with the bigger brands LRP, Orion etc you know what your getting (but pay more for the privilege)
If your planning on running regional or national events you should check that the packs are BRCA legal.

Hope this helps

What is the difference between balance charging and fast charging?

This ensure each of the two cells are the same voltave, ie 3.7v x 2 not 3v + 4.2v

Can they be charged the night before a race or is it best to only charge them on the day?

Yes

Do they need to be fully discharged?

No, leave them as they are (make sure not fully dumped though!)

Which brands appear to be the best?

Would always go for any on the BRCA list. For your racing currently, any will suffice. I use £90 Orion's but it doesnt make me any better than a £30 set I sometimes use!!!
