Default Reliable+affordable sensored ESC/Motor setup. What are my options?

Hi everyone,

So far I've been driving my TRF201 with a sensorless system, and recently I've handed my car to some other drivers to try out/check the setup... I got the reply that they can't at all feel what's going on with the throttle. And when I drive their cars, the throttle reponse seems... more sensitive, more consistent.

I've quickly become quite active in the racing scene, and I'd like to switch to sensored electronics. However, I often have problems with electronics: be it a computer or the electronics for an RC car, I manage to pick the wrong things I guess. I don't trust my own expertise (or the lack of it), That's why I'm asking your help.

I've got the following demands about the ESC/Motor:

- ESC+motor needs to be reliable (I can't afford replacing fried electronics, and I don't want dodgy hardware - or firmware - like I had with my Xcelorin ESC a few years back).
- ESC+Motor will be used in an RWD AND FWD (I currently drive 4600kV in my RWD and the car hasn't got enough speed on the larger tracks imo).
- Motor has to have a closed casing.
- Size: Everything with a footprint smaller than 32.5x45mm will fit. If the height is less than 32.5mm an ESC with a 38x45mm footprint ESC will also fit (mounted on it's side).
- ESC+motor needs to be as cheap as possible (How conflicting is that with something reliable?)
- Bonus: ESC with adjustable Punch, Throttle Curve and PWM Frequency (important for smooth power delivery with FWD Buggy).
- Bonus: ESC that can be adjusted without the use of a PC or laptop.

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions!

check out the hobbywing combos on ebay. The 60A speedo is very cheap and the 120A speedo is also great value. They are very reliable and have a full list of settings and program cards.
Not sure on the footprint size but it should tell you in the listings

Not sure about ESC size, but Fusion Exceed could be an option.

I have a 201X with the Hobbywing 120a and there 8.5t sensored motor. I had an xclersion speedo which went pop one week out of warrantry and decided to try the Hobbywing combo. The throttle is more progressive and easier to modulate, one thing i noticed on the 201 was that the whole feel of the car felt better with the smaller spurgear especially under braking which is much stronger then the losi ever was.
Overall id recommend the system's as i now use Hobbywing set up in both my cars without any problems (yet)

Hehehe

Thanks for the replies I have to say, the Hobbywing caught my attention, but I have to say the average price I see the V3 go for is not considerably cheaper than the big brands. The V2.1 is only considerably cheaper in the 60A version, but is that enough for a 2WD buggy?

I had a look at their SCT ESCs as well: They're obviously bigger, and they don't offer an adjustable throttle curve, but are somewhat cheaper.

i have been running the 60A in 2wd with a 6.5 for over a year with no issues at all. Even on a long grass track that bogged the car down a bit it still didn't have any thermal issues
