Front wheel drive buggy?

Hi all

Im just wondering has there ever been a front wheel drive 2wd buggy I know the current rules state it has to be rear wheel drive but has tehre ever been a front wheel drive 2wd buggy? If so what did i perform like was it any good?

There not modern so they wouldnt be comparable really.

I remember the Maxxum, it was uesless, it just wheelspan everywhere and was far inferior to all of the rear wheel drives that were out at the time

They must have caused a bit of a stir for the BRCA to outlaw them

They never really got outlawed just the set of construction rules that got drawn up was written in a way that they wernt allowed. They certainly wernt any quicker, either in a straight line or round the bends!!! Nose dived a fair bit too.

Take a look at your BCRA handbook.
23.1 Two wheel drive cars (2WD) are those having only one pair of driven wheels on the same axle. Either the front or rear axle may be driven. Four wheel drive (4WD) cars are those having all four wheels driven.

I have seen plenty of scratchbuilt FWD's during my 20 years of racing but none of them worked very well.

Are you thinking of building one of your own?

OK didnt know that i was just thinking maybe if they where quicker i might make a micro one to kick arse at the micro nationals but if they dont work then pppfff dont waist the time.

There's also this Ryuz FF that could lap faster than Masami at the Japanese nats in the early 90s, so they were certainly competitive when developed.

They didn't spin out easily like all the rwds did on dirt surfaces with the hard tyres we were using at the time, so were easier to drive. As we never really raced on such low grip surfaces in the UK they have never had any potential here. Unless we go back to the ice rink like surface that was Romsey in '87 (where the first prototype fwds appeared to be quick) then fwd will usually lose out to rwd.

Fwd is banned from IFMAR competitions because the rules state the surface must be natural (no astroturf) and it must last for a weeks racing, so they are usually on hard packed dirt so usually not much grip. Try driving a dirt track with the hardest tyres in your pitbox to give you an idea of how tricky it was when the rules was made. They were banned to prevent racers needing a fwd and rwd car depending on track surface and conditions before they had a chance to be developed to be competitive. Banning them saves every racer having to buy one of each just in case so no one has an advantage, the same reason they banned LRPs sensored traction control system.

If you check the ruling carefully,you will see that FWD aren't banned as such,but that they have been dumped from 2WD and put into the 4WD class instead.

I used to drive my Hunter backwards when the gearbox got too worn out (bad design), does that count?
