Default Photographing R/C Cars Indoors

As most racing now will be held indoors in sports halls with poor lighting, i am just wondering the best way to capture images and getting good results!!

Wat settings do people run on there cameras? mine always seem to come out dark or really grainy!!

What camera do you have, and do you have a flash.
On my d300 I just turn the iso up and use a lens with a fast aperture on it say 2.8 or faster. White balance on auto. Try to get a shutter speed 1/80 and practice panning you might not get many good shots at first but keep trying and it will work eventually.
If you can’t get a good picture by turning the iso up then try flash.

A fairly fast lens always helps then you just want to practice your panning and ramp the iso up as high as you can go without getting too much grain.

I've never been much of a fan of using flash as I can never be bothered properly setting it up and on-camera flash usually just gives you horrible flat pictures.

im using a nikon d40x i dont think the lense focus's that quick which is the problem. im only using the pop up flash, was using the iso at 1600,

apature will only let me go down to 5.6 with my 200mm lense!!

My lenses wont AF that terribly well indoors either, well not when the cars are within about 3m of the camera so I pick a spot on the track and take the picture as the cars reach that spot.

The lenses I use are only f4 so not that much faster than your's, i've shot f5.6 indoors before it just means you have to be better at panning or put up with some more noise.

Some pics are not well focused (1,2,4,5). Don't hesitate to make 500 pictures or more a day so you will have more chance to succeed.
Many people don't like flash (like me at the beguinning) because they don't really know how to use them. But when it's well done it's better with flash. If you can be close enough you can also buy a 50mm 1.8 or 85 1.8. I think you can only focus manually with your d40X. What's really cool with a flash is the "second curtain" (the flash burst just before the schutter closes, so you can see the blur of the speed and the car stays sharp).
Sorry for my english i do my best !
First pic is made with this technique (i don't know if you can do it with your dslr), the second is made with a D300, 1600 ISO, +5IL, 1/320 S, 70-200 VR 2.8 at 105MM and no flash. With a flash it would have been far better !
Read a lot about flash and practice ...
