Orion r10 speedos have a diode in the capacitor so that should take the hit. That is assuming you're using the original Orion capacitor?

Did the smoke come from speedo or capacitor?

I have done this twice and both times I purchased a new capacitor and the speedo was fine.

If you take the capacitor out of the housing, there should be a little black diode on it as mentioned, if that looks fried then you should be ok to just swap to a be capacitor

You should be able to smell it. It normally smells really bad if it's blown.

Best thing to do is order a new capacitor, solder it on and try it. If it works, result! If not, you have only spent £16 or so.

You can use others but be carful as they dont all come with diodes. It's the diodes give you the protection.
