Default New Orion Speedo

Has anybody had any experiences with these yet? They look a lovely bit of kit, just wondered if they have been tried here yet.
Cheers

I ran the KO version (KO manufacture the speedo for orion) on the weekend at worksop and it was superb. Had huge amounts of top end and very nice drivability.

I have got one in my B4 with a 7.5 and it feels pretty good. In comparison to my Nosram ISTC I would say that the throttle feels smoother and more progessive and the brakes are super strong, but really progressive at the same time if that makes sense, although there is very little if any drag brake on most of the settings.

They have 5 built in profiles so you don't have the adjustability of say the Nosram or LRP esc's. 3 are basic power profiles, and the other two are buggy and touring specific.

I found the smooth setting to be the best as the power comes in nice and progressive, where as the touring and High and Mid power setting have a lot of mid and top end power.

The buggy profile is seriously strange the power comes in similar to the smooth profile but the drag brake setting on it is so strong, the minute you put the stick in neutral the rear wheels lock up resulting in the car spinning round, it also makes it difficult to modulate the throttle over really bumpy areas or in the air as you lift of the throttle the nose plummets.

When it comes out I will be investing in the setting card so I can change the drag brake, and have a play with the throttle profiles.

It's a nice ESC that was easy to install although you do have to be careful as the switch and receiver plug wires aren't that long but it keeps things neat and tidy. If you don't have the heat sink and fan on it is really low profile to. Ideally you need the set up card to get the most out of it although there is nothing really wrong with stock profiles. It's a shame no wire is included in the box either. I know the later is not a big issue but on an ESC costing close to £200 you thought there would be some nice wire included in the box!!!

Yeah that buggy profile is strange isnt it. Same boat as you with the drag brake, i have the usb wire adaptor on order so hopefully when it turns up the software will be easy to use.

Yeah I don't understand the buggy profile at all. I let a couple of other people have a go and none of us could understand why it was setup like that. I did almost wonder if it was something wrong in the ESC on that setting as it seems just wrong, so am glad you are experiancing the same thing.

Let me know what the setup system is like if you get it before mine arrives!!

Yeah, the buggy setting is very strange, spins off when you release the throttle. I run a 6.5 in my rb-5 and I found the high power setting was the best for my drivestyle.

I'm running it with the heatsink only, with the fan it was rubbing the inside of the body with the original rb-5 body. got me a proline body now, so I'll see if it fits better. but really no problem as the esc dont get hot anyway.

anyone know where I can find the usb adopter thing??

It seems that the only speedo that worked fine out of the box was only ISTC from Nosram and LRP! And they were the first ever brushless speedos for serious competition.

Anyway I just found that!

£215 just for a speedo
So it would cost you the best part of £600 just to kit out two cars with speedos and motors

I have seen this.

#ORI65004: Vortex 1/10 Brushless Speed Controller - Sensor/Sensorless - 70A (Over 6.5T)

This part number isn't listed on Orions spec sheet for the Vortex. But if you're running a 2WD and have no intention of going above a 6.5T motor it appears to be a good buy - Price is £80.74. + Postage

I have only ever run Novak GTB's and am looking to buy another ESC. Do I spend the extra £100 or take a punt on the Orion? I use 2.4Ghz DSM2 Spektrum. This will be going in a 2WD with either a Novak 6.5R or 6.5L motor.

If anyone has used this particular model, would like to hear the feedback.

Many thanks

Hi Ben
I run this one # ORI65003 - Vortex 1/10 BL Sensor/Sensorless Controller 100A (Over 3.5T) but if you are only running 2wd you should be fine with model you quoted, its a excellent esc and i was previously running a lrp sphere and noticed the orion had bags of punch even on the lowest setting which i must add is very easy to set up and all at a great price.
Neil

Might be worth asking Mirage? I think they are the Disty for them in the UK.

Or here, where they sell 'em.

I just got one of these to try... ORI65007 with the cooling fan.. nice bit of kit.. yet to try it out though.. (would like to try the LRP SXX which is out soon as well...looks like it may be similar judgeing by reports..)

Ive ordered through DMS the KO-61018 ICS USB Software (Horizon are the KO importers) as this is what you need to amend the parameters on the speedo.. you get a USB dongel which you plug the receiver wire into, plus various extension leads..from what ive read you can change the profiles quite abit to suit your style.. brakes/power etc

Like someone else has said, considering the cost i would have at least expected some decent quality wires, sensor wire and maybe the software, but this has to be all purchased separatley!

Cheers

Nick
