Ive got Death Magnetic, I wasnt all that impressed really. I guess mainly due to the fact the 'Bar' had been raised soo high from the pre St Anger era of there albums..
Any other band that had released Death Magnetic standard would have been a 10 / 10 * Album. Lets face it its hardly Master Of Puppets!

Metallica's problem is that they don't have any writers in the band any longer.
The first two albums were written by Dave Mustaine, who was gone before they recorded them. They then survived on the stuff that Cliff Burton wrote, for two albums after his death. Like Gary says, Death Magnetic is the first thing they've done themselves that even approches that that Mustaine/Burton did in the 1980's.
