Post hyper 7 black cooling head

Hi i have a hyper black edition ive never been able to get it running properly but may have found the prob.

I noticed the srews holding the cooling head on were loose, as a result air has been getting into the engine causing running probs.

There was no gaskett at the joint is this normal or should there be a gasket to make an air tight sill between the engine and cooling head,or should i use a liquid gasket sealent?

There isn't a gasket between the head and crankcase, though there may be some shims. The airtight seal is made by REALLY tightening the head bolts, and the tight fit of the parts.
