Default How many girls/women in the hobby?

I'm interested to know approximately how many (percentage wise) females race on a reasonably regular basis. At the few events I've been to there have only been a small number, about 1 or 2 in 50+ racers. Is this typical, or are there clubs/regions/classes that have significantly higher proportion.

As a science teacher, I'm keen to get more youngsters interested in the hobby but feel it is a very male dominated one currently.

we have 1 female at our club with an average of 18 drivers

I have tried to get my mrs into racing, but I get the reply "I would if other girls did it"

It's been my experience that it's about the same percentage as in any other form or motorsports, about 1 in every 50+ racers.
But, I think it like any other sports participation - for the percentage to grow, it takes one that potentially attracts another which attracts another. For, as with anything, nobody wants to be the only one of their gender (only girl, or only boy) there.

Thanks for feedback. I'm pondering how we might get more girls interested. Perhaps I'll quiz the girls in my classes.

Getting my six year old into it was easy - painted the car purple - she had a mess around at the plough at the weekend (thanks Steve) and wasn't bad at all - she want a pink car - she'll get one too - anything to get her into it - my son (4) is already driving but not quiet up to track racing - loves crashing too much - he's pretty good with the mini wreck and slash 4x4 though ;0)

I've raced since I was 9 (I'm 22 now) though I've had to take breaks over the last few years because of gap years / university / studying in Japan (like I am now).

In the North East last year we actually had 5 girls racing quite regularly - me, Gem Towers, Nat Williams, Clare Hirst and Danielle Bulmer which is probably the highest amount I've seen since I started racing. And considering some regionals only had 30 or so drivers, 5 is quite a large chunk of racers.

At the oOple race last year there were 6 of us I think.

... GIRL POWER!!

i race quite often at my local club, there are about 40 guys that race there and only 2 girls including me, the other does buggy and i did mardave (just about to move to buggy) in the mardave i got to top 4 at the club, so it isnt too bad to say its 'a mans thing'
best thing is, my other half is racing buggys at the same club, so i get to show him up if i beat him HEHE he will never hear the end of it from the other guys...
i do think tho that more women should get into the sport, the same with any type of motorsport too, i want to see women ACTUALLY driving the cars or riding the motorbikes rather than standing around slapped in sponsers waving flags or holding signs GET A REAL JOB lol
