newbie and info on whitcliffe sunday??

hi all

i have just bought my 7 yr old his first 1/10th buggy 2wd and i am wanting to introduce him into racing r/c...so i wanted to know can we just turn up practice and race as he is a complete novice(so am i)...or are there steps to be made first?? any advise is appreciated thanks.
