On a more serious note, scrap price where i live at the moment is at £95 per tonne, so if you scrapped the car you wouldnt get over £100 for it really.

I meant the details of exactly what cars are included. There's bound to be some strict conditions relating to car age, length of ownership etc, etc to stop people buying old cars just to trade in.

Off the top off my head, car must have been registered before 1st August 1999, you must have been the registered keeper for a year before the start of the scheme, car must have a valid MOT but may be SORN. Govt will give £1,000 if the manufacturer gives £1,000 discount too. Maximum of 300,000 scrappage deals before the money runs out. Only valid on new cars registered after the start date of the scheme (not pre-registered cars).

All in all a bit of a fudge by the government. Really the discount is only a grand, which is not a great deal more than the resale value of most MOT'd vehicles anyway. Makes a bit of sense as an incentive at the super-cheap end of the market (Fiat and Hyundai have already jumped on it with special deals offering an extra £100 off), makes very little difference at the upper end of the market, although the extra discount is always worth having!

We considered scrappaging our second car against a cheap runabout, but to be honest we don't use it, so buying a new one would be a waste of money.

Scrappage benefit 'lost in 88 days'
The £2,000 incentive under the Government's "cash for bangers" car-scrappage scheme will be wiped out in just 88 days due to depreciation, it has been revealed.

From Monday, owners of cars 10 years old or more will get £2,000 if they trade in their old model and buy a new one.

But according to price comparison company uSwitch.com, vehicle depreciation is set to be the "thorn in the side" of the scrappage scheme.

The company said on average, the initial £2,000 incentive is wiped out in depreciation in just 88 days of owning the new car.

So the sensible thing to do is, sell your 10 year old car for a grand (ish) then go and buy a 3 month old car which is 2k less than new and you can still haggle them down if you have cash

Seem to me that anyone who is running around in a 10 years old car, is not doing so by choice, so could they afford a brand new car even with the 2k knocked off.

There are plenty of folk with 10 year old cars that have them by choice. A carefully bought low(ish) mileage 10 year old car with a good service history does exacly the same job as a new car, at a fraction of the cost.

Many folk with new cars can't afford them, that's why they don't own them, the finance/lease companies do.

Just put the Clio on ebay, someone will buy it, possibly with the intention of fixing it.

Isn't that when the lease company takes the car away, auctions it and the shortfall (plus penalty charges) are still owed by the lease policy holder?

All this is driving down the prices of 2nd hand cars. Some real bargains to be hand.

To be honest, 10 year old cars are far better value for money then new. Ive had 2 new cars and id never do it again, the amount lost in depreciation I just can't ever justify even if I was a lottery winner. For me i'll always choose something atleast 2-3 year old and depreciated by more than 50% from original purchase price..... Doing this means I can afford a top spec large motor rather than a mid spec small to medium sized motor. And then I decide to own it for longer, unless I kill it before time like I did my Focus...
