Default sanwa exzes x and esc

Hi

I have just purchased an exzes x. Having set up my first car I got a surprise when my esc started smoking and died.

After reading the instructions I found out that it doesn't work with older esc because it works in high response mode.

The instructions aren't overly helpful, so my question is how do you know what esc's are compatible? I'd rather not play an expensive game of Russian roulette with Speedo!

I'd be very surprised if the response level caused the smoke - although of course it's possible. What esc "was" it?

It was an old novak brushed speed controller.
