Default LRP escīs: SXX TC vs. SXX Competition

I read on the LRP homepage that for 4WD Offroad you should go for a SXX TC esc (which i did) and for 2WD you should take the SXX Competition. The SXX Competition hasnīt got an aluminium air cooling unit as the TC has so i am wondering why it should be better for 2WD Offroad as the TC??? Is it only because of the height? Have 2WD buggies generally less space in height for the esc? The SXX Competiton has no cooling at all and i am wondering if it doensīt get too hot...Please somebody help me
Maybe someone of you has the SXX Comp. and can say somethign about it...

I've got the comp sxx in my b4 and it works perfectly without getting hot. It got too hot in my 4wd (Durango) but the TC works perfectly in that car.

Thanks for letting me know. Was the reason for you to get the Comp. the height in the b4 or did you buy it because of the commendation of LRP for the 2WD cars? Have you ever checked the temperature exactly? I would be interested in how hot it got in your b4 when racing hard?

I have a SXX TC in my B44 and SXX Comp in my X6. Why both types? - I didn't need the extra oomph that the TC will take for my 2WD so I decided to buy the cheaper version.

Both work superbly and I've never had the temp check go above 2 flashes (out of 10 max) on either of them. I also run the TC without a fan and it's fine right down to 5.5T.

Mind you, I'm not one of the fastest drivers around

Thanks, this helps a lot. I think i will wait until i have my TRF201 and buy the esc afterwards. If i have enough space i will buy the SXX TC, if space is tight i will get the Comp.
Maybe for interest of somebody: I talked to LRP Germany and they told me that the electronics are completely the same on both types, itīs only the height because of the missing aluminium cooling armature why there are 2 types.

One thing is different - the TC has 11WG motor/battery wires compared to the Comp which has 12WG. It allows more amps to be pushed through at lower resistance, but really only of any interest to the TC guys.

Interesting! Even the guy at LRP didnīt know that. Tony: have you by chance ever heard the following? I run a LRP Vector X12 7.5 motor with a SXX TC esc on my DB01R. Track has VERY LOOSE soil (dirt) at the moment. Because of that i thought i will take a smaller pinion than recommended by LRP to make sure the motor doensīt get too hot. I took 18t. For the correct ration (8.0:1 for this motor) i should take a 23t pinion. The motor got very hot after a few minutes (10 min. and about 80 degrees Celsius!!). The guy at LRP said it is possible to run the car with a ratio too low and getting the motor too hot because of that. Same if you take a pinion too big. I always thought that if you take a smaller pinion the motor has no problem because it doensīt need that much power. Have you ever heard that you can overheat the motor by running a pinion too small?
Also he said that i should change the timing of the motor which can also help to get the motor cooler. I guess he meant to reduce timing. Is this of any use? I am wuite desperate now...

Hard to say. I'd go a bit higher a pinion and see how it works out. Don't know which you have.
Maybe a 21 or 22.
I'm overgeared atm and in about 6-8 minutes my motor reaches about 70-80 degrees (°C) aswell.

Experiences at the club are that the X12's generally run a bit hot.

I've been wondering about the timing. The standard timing insert is -10°
I'm guessing this means more torque and less RPM's then 0°.
But i'm not really sure on this.

Maybe the 0° runs cooler then -10 or the guy from LRP might have thought you already changed the timing.

Yep I've run my SXX TC with an X12 7.5 and had similar problems. The X12's do seem to run much hotter than other motors (e.g. compared to my Ballistic 5.5 and 6.5). Since fitting a heatsink with cooling fan to the X12 it has run at a reasonable temperature. Someone else at my club had X12 heating problems and he was also told that under and overgearing of the pinion can cause heat issues.

Regarding timing check that your motor has the timing insert with 4 dots. I understand that some of the earlier motors were shipped with the two dots timing insert fitted which is more aggressive and so is prone to cause overheating in comparison to four dots.

I just checked my motor and manual. The online manual from LRP states the -10° (four dots) as factory standard while the one that came with the motor states that 0°(two dots) is standard.
Yet it came with the -10 installed.

Thanks Tony and Carno for your answers. I will check which timing insert i have and let you know later on...

What motors do other guys in your clubs run that have no problems with getting hot? Novak? What are equal motors in quality to the X12?

I have installed a 21t pinion earlier this day and will test tomorrow if it runs cooler.

Just checked my motor: exactly what you told. The manual says 2 dots is standard, it came mounted with the 4 dots. (-10). Strange but according to Tonys statement the best setting for running cooler.
Will see tomorrow...

Yep - the old manual stated that two dots was the standard, but more recently this has been changed to four dots i.e. -10., the lowest timing.

Are you getting problems with your ESC overheating?

Just to let you guys updated: I raced my DB01R on my track yesterday: much grip in comparison to all previous runs because it was perfectly wet. Had about 85 Degrees Celsius after 10-12 minutes of running with a 21t pinion. So absolutely no difference than to the run with 18t. What do you guys think? Should i be trying the 23t too ( then i would be as near as possible to LRPīs commendation: 8,0:1 and with 23t i have 8,111:1)?

@TONY: what heatsink with cooling fan have you mounted on your X12? I think it would be a perfect idea to get that too? Maybe a link?

Generally it says brushless shouldnīt go up higher than 77 degrees. So as we all know now that the X12īs are always getting higher than other i wonder if this is of any disadvantage for the motor? Will the durability be much shorter when running hot or does it have no influence? I have no probely with a 85 degree motor as long as i donīt have it much shorter than other motors because of this...

I tend to use the Ansmann http://www.jespares.com/electric-mod...tegory_id=1265- cheap (Billlig) but they do the job. You can buy the official LRP heatsink and fan at 6 times the price.

Just for everyone who has the same heating problems with the X12 as i had: i bought the LRP Heatsink plus fan. It ws expensive as Tony said but my LHS only had this one and i wanted to see if a BIG fan does the job. Took me more than an hour to do all the wiring new and it all fits so tight, there absolutely no more space in the car.
The good point is that i drove the car with the best ratio (23t pinion) for the 7.5 turn X12 and i also by driving fast on loose soil it didnīt get over 64 degress Celsius so i am very happy!!!
