I race fine on brushes motors against everyone else with brushless. It won't kill you using brushed for a bit until you can afford new gear.

£18.99 lipo's from HK on ebay will be fine

A really good, very small brushless system would be a Tekin RS or RS Pro.

They are pricy, but are much smaller than most other ESCs, have timing boost (which can be very important in stock classes), and can be programmed on a computer.

A more price-conscious ESC would be the Speed Passion GT2.0, which has a neat hand-held programmer. Their new V3 motors are also looking to be good.
