Default melted my idler gear

I recently melted my idler gear on my cat sx (U3346).

I'm wondering why that would happen? Is there anything I can do to avoid it?

I have a 10.5t brushless motor in there and a turnigy 3600 3s lipo.

22t pinion 81t spur..

It is pretty fast, but I was surprised to find the idler melted after a few months of running really nicely. Is it a common problem?

Don't run 3S and a few months is normal wear and tear. No competition 1/10th scale dreivetrain will last very long on 3S.

I guess if I go to 2s things are going to seem a lot slower though. I've kinda got used to the speed.

I haven't done any serious racing yet though, just racing friends and having fun.

Will it seem a lot slower if I go down to 2s?

so if I upped the rating of the motor to 5.5 (from my current 10.5) and ran 2s instead of 3s then maybe the speed would be around the same as I'm getting with 3s and 10.5? surely that would put the same pressure on the drive train though?

plus I'd have to spend a few hundred quid
