JConcepts CLASH - day 2 - Qualifying Day One - 11th December 2008
The second day of the clash race was two rounds of qualifying. The atmosphere in the pits was noticably more lively than practice day, with more presence than day1. By 8.30 am drivers were busy wrenching on their cars, whilst race organisers covered the track with sodium chloride, a chemical which should help to speed up the grooving process on the track. Due to the excessive amount of rain the previous day, this couldn't be done until morning which in turn resulted in delays starting qualifying.

This dude is all business. |
Racers were greeted by improved weather conditions from how it had been left at 3pm on practice day. The track and pitting area were already starting to dry out, and with early morning sunshine things were starting to look up. Due to our early arrival and a slight delay in the start of qualifying whilst the track was prepared for the day, I had some time to spare so wandered around the pits to see what randomness I could find.

Ben Jemison - he's a random kinda guy. |
|
First stop was the live-rc pits, these guys are racing toy cars AND covering the event live, top notch. They've got 4 cameras up around the track and are broadcasting live over the internet all weekend so login to liverc.com and watch us! |

Heading back towards our pitting area, I spotted the most awesome trailer, so naturally invited myself in for a few exclusive photos.

The 'Shake and Bake Racing Team' are a small family team who bring all their toy cars to display at events like these. How ace is that! The trailer also has the added benefit of basic living gear too, awesome. |

Meanwhile back at the X-Factory camp, Chazz seized the opportunity to conduct a podcast interview with UK superstar Tom Cockerill. Check out the X-Factory website for more info.
Shortly after 09.30 drivers briefing was announced, and racers flocked eagerly towards the track area to listen to race commentator Jimmy Babcock say his piece. They were told all qualifyers would be 5minutes and finals would be a bit of a mixture, the 10th 4wd for instance will be 8minutes, the 4wd electric 8th 12min, 10th 2wd 10 minutes and the nitros around the 30min mark. Slightly worryingly Jimmy also said unlike the UK he wouldn't be calling faster cars through during qualifying and noone would be called finished until the last car had completed its run when simply race over was called. I got bored after 30 seconds so came back to write this madness instead. |

|
With the first race due to start at 10.30am, I still had some time to go in search of randomness, so continued venturing around the pits. One thing that stood out was how many pit-trailers there are in attendance. These are a little bit like horse boxes, but done out really posh, I found one guy watching a wide screen TV in his trailer, so naturally he let me take a photo. |

Of course to tow around these trailers there are some big machines parked up, I think these are ace. They like their alloy rims here, Ryan Maifield told us his last set of 24's were $4300 inc tyres.. pimp dawg or what.

It was also during this free time that X-Factory Daddy Chazz took the opportunity to podcast-interview me. I have to say this took me by suprise and I was concentrating on doing some photo madness, so please excuse me for the rather dull and boring interview, I would however recommend you listen to Ben Jemisons podcast with Chazz, because Ben is a nutter and it turned out more to be him interviewing Chazz. |
Once 10.30 had passed racing was upon us, starting with the super stock truck class, run with 13.5turn brushless motors.
|
The real excitement started in heats 4 and 5 though, when two heats of slash's were bashed around the track. This class was added to the schedule two weeks before the event due to popular demand. Jimmy Babcock announced that this class isn't so serious, and brings the fun back into racing. Some oOple lads were on hand to take a few photos of the fun. |
Ryan Maifield brought his new electric Associated RC8 beast to race, he was using the Castle Creations Mamba Monster speedo and motor combo and two 5000mah 7.4v Reedy lipos in series giving 5000Mah capacity at 14.8v. grrrr

Our race commentator Jimmy Babcock seemed to be a fan of this new class, commenting that they were generally faster than their nitro brothers. The Brits seemed to take to the class well with a good showing in the first round; Paul Bradby 2nd, James Helliwell 3rd and Steve peirce 4th. Tom Cockerill doesn't get a special mention because he pulled my chair out from behind me causing me to sit on the floor and bash my head. How we laughed. |

For those who havent raced on clay before its a whole different style from the usual UK high grip tracks where you would be fairly aggressive, no point and squirt here its more of a constant drift (before the track dries and blue grooves up anyway) you have to be super smooth. The track surface too is ultra flat and the cars just whisp by.
Round one was pretty slippery as the surface was still damp. A clean line started to appear about half way through the round (of 32 heats!!) though, if you drifted off-line into the dirt it was like running on maltesers! |

Richard Lowe TQ'd 4wd expert in Rd1. Well done Rich! Bradders was up there in 3rd, Lee Martin 4th, Tom 'The Hair' Cockerill hopped into 6th, Steve 'Vermin' Pierce had a goodn' in 8th and James (Ralph) Helliwell snook into 9th, poor lil' BJ was unlucky to clip a pipe and leave half a kilo of wishbone behind :( |
 |
The JConcepts clash is one of very few events in the USA where both nitro (gas) powered and electric cars race. The list of different classes competing is almost endless, more than I even knew existed, with variety like this it's hard to get bored. There have been over 250 entries to this event across all classes, with some drivers competing in as many as 5 classes each - that's hardcore. |

At 3.30pm the organisers announced that instead of diving straight into round 2 (which started with the electric classes) the nitros would run first as engines were not allowed to be started before 10am, so tommorrow morning will start half way through the electric heats who will run twice. Confusing we know.. pesky neighbours
