JConcepts CLASH - day 4 - 14th December 2008

Originally the finals day was due to kick off at 9am, however due to the popularity of this event the start time was brought forwards to 8am. Some technical difficulties at the start of the day caused a half hour delay in getting the finals started, after which the day ran flawlessly. The last day of this awesome event seemed like a good time to catch up with Jason and Alison of JConcepts stardom to suss out how it's all gone for them.

Interview with J-Ro and Alison- JConcepts warriors.

Have you been pleased with how everything has gone for this event?
It's gone well yeah, we got more entries than last year - we got to 260 entries. We realy appreciate the suppoort of other guys like Chazz from X-Factory and
you guys from oOple.

J-Ro showing some oOple love.

How many times has the Clash been run, and who came up with the idea?
This is the second year we're run the event, and it was Jasons idea.

Are you running it next year - are there any dates or venues in mind?
Yeah, at the moment we're thinking the second weekend in december, but no venue yet.

Tell us about J-concepts wave and rage..?
We're going to have two more events in '09, the first one is the Rage, in April, that will be in North Carolina. It's going to be at an indoor venue called Caroilinas RC.
Rage is going to be a lot like our other events, we're going to have a lot of different classes.
The Wave is going to be at the end of May, that's going to be at OCRC in Southern California.
We like the fun that we've had with these events, so we want to run more in different parts of the country. to promote the product and show people what we have.

How many people are involved in organising an event of this size?

Oh wow, i would say 5 or 6, plus the club.

We think you're one of the nicest guys in R/C, how do you stay so calm all of the time?

I don't know, I guess today was pretty testing, because I TQ'd the 4wd class, but I broke pretty much on the second turn - the rear universal popped out of the outdrive. I guess inside I am really upset, but I would probably have been even more upset if it was 10 years ago - but I can control it better now; the event's sucessful and I'm happy about that.
when you're racing and competitive, nothing is as satisfying as having a good run yourself. some people show frustration on the outside, some people on the inside.

Tell us about good run gear..?
Basically we kinda make some racing apparel for all racing enthusiasts, not just RC. The first thing they always say in racing is that people do good runs, so I kinda got it in my head, it's a catch word. The tagline 'much respect' we put on all the tshirts. Like when you say someone did a good run, you're respecting that they did a good job.

.

Does Alison have any other hobbies?
No, I need a hobby, but then I don't have time for one! Normal girl stuff.

Did you two first meet at racing?

oh no... we met in Savannah, at a bar.

What's the story behind JConcepts?
It was in 2003 in Clearwater, Florida, the origninal BJ4 debuted at the worlds in Florida. We have our 5th anniversary this year.

Do you ever regret the name 'BJ'?

No, the significance of the name is that it's Brad and Jason, it's easy and it's short. people recognise that..

What is your funniest r/c memory?
It's gotta be something involving Scott Hughes.

Tell us about some of your new products?
The 1/10th scale stuff and the Bar Codes tyres - they're available in 3 compounds - blue, white and gold. We're really excited that we had all our new 8th scale tyres for this event. we've tried to create tyres for all track conditions in the US, now we're focusing on tyres for other countries too. We're pretty proud of the slash bodies too.

Anything else you'd like to add to the interview?
We'd like to thank everyone that has been involved, Allison, Paul Wynn, Tim Davis was helping us a lot. John Faulkner - he did a lot of wrenching for us. The team guys.. my parents for coming down, and Jimmy Babcock, Fred Reep, and the Coral Springs Club.

Paul Bradby and James Helliwell can be seen in this photo of the Red Geek Squad sporting part of the new range of clothing from JConcepts - 'Good Run Gear'. It's a range of clothing aimed at anyone, but inspired by racers, they have some really cool logos on blue, black, grey and red tshirts. They also have some really cool stickers and have more clothing including hoodies in the pipeline, look out for it - you too can look as cool as these guys! (cough)

Slash A main.

Unlike the A-Finals in most classes, the Slashes were bashed early in the day, with the grid lining up before 11am for the last race in this class. After taking the newly administered electric slash class by storm the day before, and qualifying in 1st and 2nd on the grid respectively, Lee 'Pidge' Martin and Ryan 'the drinks are on me' Maifield were no-where to be seen at the front of the field. The A-main was won by Bobby Philips with 20 laps, Bobby made a small mistake on the first lap, costing him two places, but worked his way back into pole and never looked back after the 4th lap. Leon McIntosh was hot on Bobbys tail towards the end of the race, reeling him in with close lap times, averaging 30 second laps, and finishing a very close 2nd place just 0.8seconds behind Bobby.

You may be wondering why there are a few DNS's, well due to the language barrier the simple Brits got totally confused and managed to miss some of their races ;-S totally wrecking their chances of bumping up to the 12 car A main... We werent the only ones though... Doh

Enduro A Final

Poor Ben was taken out 3 laps in which broke his steering and Tom's servo horn fell out and motor wire fell off...oops. For the first 8 mins JR Mitch and Brian Kinwald followed each other round swapping every few laps, the gap not extending beyond 3 seconds. JR clipped a corner at 10 mins, we all heard a nasty crack from his balljoint but luckily for him it didnt break right through. Unluckily for Brian though his lipo started to die at around 12 mins and the speed of his truck halved, all he could do was limp round. This was fortunate for Richard Lowe though who had been 6-7 seconds back from the lead through most of the race, he had heaps of power left thanks to a doubled up trakpower cell, he pushed up the pace but couldnt catch JR who cruised home on 36 laps, with Richard in 2nd place on 35 laps, and Bobby Philips in third place.

Ryan Maifield took advantage of pole and led the 12 minute main from start to finish, Paul Bradby and James Helliwell followed him round for 4-5 minutes while swapping position between themselves several times, James made a mistake on the corner tabletop which cost him a long time and he dropped down to 5th, Paul held on to 2nd and cruised to the end while 3rd, 4th and 5th swapped and changed all the way to the last lap, Kevin Bell came in 3rd half a second ahead of James in 4th and Novak's Charlie Suangka fifth.

Interview with XFactory Star Tom 'The hair' Cockerill and 'how to do a lap of the track'.

You've made a lot of effort to come over to the States to race at the clash, is it hard to organise your racing gear for
travel? Any tips for racers who havent travelled before?

Well Virgin have a 46kilo luggage allowance over 2 bags so I squeeze all my racing tools in one and hair care products for
the week in the other.

Tom Cockerill proves his identity three times.

Why do you bring so many haircare products with you?
I like to look hot for racing as I think it makes me drive better so my extensive grooming process usually starts a couple of hours before racing starts, I start with a full body wax (please see beach photos) then Lee Martin comes over and we spend an hour or so with the hair straightening tools.

You're a top UK racer at the young age of 20 which is all good but means you're too young to drink in the USA, do you have any family
or guardians to chaparone you?

Yes, uncle Chazz feeds and waters me with nutritionally balanced and eco friendly burgers, chips, coke and eating tools.

Xfactory sounds a bit like Xfactor, with your boyband hair and boyish good looks will you be auditioning?
I tried last year but Simon Cowell said that I looked like a tool, how harsh is that?

Chazz loves his podcasts and we saw him collar you for a chat, what was he talking to you about?

He was asking me about my days as a model for snap-on tools.

Chazz tells us he gives a team managers pep-talk every day before racing, do you think you could aspire to be management
material?

Well I
currently work part-time in McDonalds and my boss says i can be considered for a management training course as he
says its a valuable tool for me in the future if the wig modelling and surfer dude career doesnt work out
.

A lap with Tom Cockerill.

Hit the downslope out wide on the last jump to get a nice sweeping line onto the straight.

Coming into to turn 1 you need to lightly get on the brakes to let the rear end break away and get the front to turn-in and stay tight.

As you come up the hill you need to keep it as straight as possible through the chicane
and slow down enough at the top to ensure you don't run wide onto the dust.

As you come down the hill you keep tight to stay on the groove and line yourrself up for the little hop into the 180.

I get on the brakes hard here to make the car pivot round the corner, whereas people not running a one-way diff need to take a more sweeping line.

As you come back up the hill and into the 'S section' you need to keep tight to the pipe, as if you run wide you are on the dust and will lose a lot of time.

The next corner is a sweeping left-hander which needs to be taken fairly wide to line up for the triple jump.

The triple is fairly easy to do, but you can gain a lot of time by hitting it right.

I've found the best line to be take it so you cross the track and hit the downslope, as this gives a quick line into the next 180.

As you come out of the 180 you're straight into the big table top which agains needs to be downsloped to turn quick laps.

There is then a little straight into another 180, where I again use the brakes to pivot the car round. The it's a simple run into the double
where you want to be landing on the downslope fairly wide to get another good run onto the straight.

Tom "throttle, throttle, throttle, brake, flick hair" Cockerill.

1/8th 2wd - JR82 class.

Paul 'P Dub' Wynn dominated the J82 outlaw class main, starting from pole the JConcepts driver led from flag to flag.

JConcepts super driver Paul Wynn, pictured with his cars here, won the A-main in the J82 class, finished 4th in the 4wd A-main, and 8th in the 2wd A final. Good work.

Schumacher sent a small team of their new drivers to the Clash; James Helliwell, Ben Jemison and Steve Pierce. They had all been running the Schumacher Cat SX since the end of the outdoor season where the first few cars performed extremely well at the F2's and F345's on astroturf and grass.
The cars had been run on dirt at the Euros in Italy by Simon Moss, Grant Williams and Mr. Missel with great success but this was the first time UK drivers had raced them on dirt in the States. The three drivers had hardly ever driven on clay and didnt quite know what to expect. They all started pretty much on standard setup but opted for a full front diff instead of the oneway roller/full oneway which seems to have been prevelant on the UK tracks.
Ben Jemison put together some stunning driving to qualify 6th in the A main, James Helliwell did well to place 9th and a slightly unlucky Steven Pierce qualified BQ. Final finishing positions were 5th for Ben and 7th for James, surely something they can be happy with and build on, and it shows the Cat has pace on every terrain.

1/10th 4wd electric buggy.

Good showing here for the Brits in the 8 minute 4wd A with 5 of the top 7 finishers coming from the UK! But bad luck for race organiser and pole man Jason Ruona as his car popped a drive shaft on lap 1 turn 4 leaving Rich Lowe to tow everyone round. Lee Martin followed behind infront of Bradders for first half of the race, Paul clipped a pipe and broke something on his car and dropped down leaving a bit of a gap from third to fourth, Rich suffered a blown shock bladder half way through slowing his lap times slightly as the lack of damping made the big jumps tricky.
Lee Martin managed to nip through and the two trailed round until the second to last lap where Rich also clipped the marking and snapped a CVD resulting in a 3wd BJ4, Tom Cockerill who was in fourth must have sensed Rich slowing infront of him as he pushed real hard and just managed to catch and pass Richard on the last lap.
James Helliwell had an awful first two laps, dropping to last quite a way behind the pack, he managed to pick through most of the field though to 7th and said he only needed 1 more lap to catch lil Ben, Ben doesnt believe that though cos he's hooters new number one driver.
Ben Jemison drove extremely well in 4wd with his CAT SX and cruised through the race to finish 5th just behind Paul Wynn who he sportingly let by after tagging and spinning him, XFactory owner Paul Sinclair finished 6th, James Helliwell 7th, Kody Numendahl 8th with a B44, Mr LiveRC Brandon Rohde in 9th with the Kyosho, Paul Bradby 10th, Brett Kingsbury 11th and TQ man Jason Ruona 12th.

1/8th Nitro Buggies.

Maifield totally stormed from start tone to finish buzzer to take the win by 3 laps from Associated team mate Paul Bradby who managed to find his pit men this time ;(). Ryans car looked superb while Bradbys had some grip issues, Paul drove a sensible race though and nicely banked second. Lee Martin, JR Mitch and Paul all raced closely for the first quarter of the race for second place but a flameout for JR and technical problems for Lee meant that he dropped out and JR lost a lap and a half, he did manage to keep it together though to round off his Associated car into the top 3.

Interview with Jimmy Babcock - commentator extrodinaire.

It's been a good event, have you enjoyed the week?
I've definitely enjoyed the week, my voice hasn't enjoyed it though. It's been great coming out here. Jason's always been really good to me.

You're ace, how do you manage to talk all day long!??
Very carefully, you've gotta save your voice, i've kinda mastered it now.
I used to get really fired up early on in an event but i learnt i have to pace myself. I always lose my voice at the nitro races. Drinking tea with honey in it helps.

Is commentating your full time job?
No, i own a hobby shop in California called Hot-Rod Hobbies, we have over 2 acres of race track there I also hold 6 team events throughout the year, and usually get hired to do 15-20 race weekends as well.
It's what i love to do. I raced professionally for Losi for 14 years, then when my results weren't as good i had to figure a way of staying in the hobby and do something i love. I used to do part time nnouncing at my local club, then did a couple of races at my track, then people started hiring you.

Are you involved with any other hobbies?
This takes up all my time, when i'm not working at the shop in the week i'm commentating at weekends. I love going to go karting tracks though.

Tell us about JB:RL.?

It stands for Jimmy Babcock racing league. I started it 5 years ago. We have races throughout the year.`

Have you ever been to England? Would you be interested in coming to commentate in the UK?
i've been asked to commentate at an event in march st Worksop next year, but I havent had chance to arrange anything yet.

1/8th Nitro Truggy

Maifield and JR Mitch were racing pretty close for half of the truggy A main, with pidge in third, the top two were pushing each other. As they managed to pull some distance ahead of the field, they both approached to lap Lee, and when Maifield made his move on Lee they just collided awkwardly, breaking Maifields servo, this left JR out to storm ahead on his own and Pidge finished a fortunate 2nd place.

Interview with Tim Davis - JConcepts sales warrior.

Tell me about your everyday work/life?
I'm a professional hobbyist, my favourite hobbies are racing toy cars, golf, badminton and
shark fishing.

Tim is a consumate professional at all times

Do you tell people that you race toy cars?
I always tell people yes, it's how you meet women, you tell them you race toy cars.

How do you help out at JConcepts and would Jason and Alison cope without you?
I work in sales, I also clean the restrooms (toilets) on Thursdays, and I am the chief bartender at JConcepts. I think Jason and Allisons lives would be immensely more pleasurable without me. Jason has been trying to void my employment contract for the last 7 years, but my attorney is much better than his.

What's your most memorable moment in RC?

Hmmm, *smirks*, I'm gonna say winning 2wd modified at GOAR in March of 1994. GOAR was the best track in Florida for many years, with all the best drivers.

Do you have any pets, and if you could be any animal what would you be?
Yes, I have a horse called Nico. I'd be a platypus, a duckbilled platypus.
I did have a Jack Russel terrier but my ex-girlfriend gave it away,

it was really mean of her and i cried for 9 days straight.

Have you ever been to the UK? What for?
Yes, I have family over there.

Is it true that you manually extract specimens from horses on a daily basis?
Is it true that you manually extract specimens from horses on a daily basis?
That is not true. But I do sell the semen from my horse, however I don't exctract it, I
have a professional horse-semen-extractor who does that. (Imagine having that on your business card)

Who is your hero?
Tony Hawk - pro skater..

How do you plan to celebrate your success at this event?
Well, my failure to properly prepare my race cars cost me many good runs, all 9 runs in 3 classes, therefore i celebrated with my good friends Lee Martin and Ryan Mayfield at an uppity bar/nightclub on saturday night. Instead of participating in any of my main events. I ran one but broke the car. oOps.

What could have improved your overall racing result at this event?
Preparing my vehicles for the race before arriving at the event might help. Actually if I had been
interviewed earlier in the week I think it would have motivated me, I'd have been more
focussed and have more determination to live up to the standards that Vicky would have
set for me on Thursday. (geez this guy talks rubbish - but he's ace).

What is your favourite cheese?
Swiss. Well what for, what are you doing with the cheese? Cheese on toast - definitely swiss. For more creative uses of cheese I'd go with melted cheddar - for dipping and experimentation.

How often do you experiment with cheese?
Every Saturday afternoon at 3pm..

What is your favourite jconcepts product?
Goosebumps for 1/10th scale buggy.

Is 1/10th scale your favourite class to run?
Yes, 2wd modified.

Who's paying for the drinks tonight?
Ryan Mayfield is paying for all the drinks for everyone this week. In fact just put Ben, he's paying for the drinks tonight.

Do you think Lil' Ben is ace??
Yeah I think he's ace. My first impression of Ben is that he reminded me of a rabid squirrel, then later i realised that he was more like an infant porcupine, seperated from his mother, and upset about that.

What do you think of the other english racers?
I really enjoy having all the english racers at the JConcepts clash, it truly makes it an international event: gentlemen like Steven Pierce and Rich Lowe, James Helliwell, obviously Lee Martin, Bradders, Chazz Sinclair - oh wait, he's not english.

Are there any other international drivers at this event?
We've got the Brazillians. Jamie and Danniel, however they were not racing, but very much a part of the weekends activities.

What are your plans for the clash next year?
We're going to have a special entry in the sportsman class, captain morgan will be participating. also we plan to run all of the expert a-finals in reverse track direction, and we're going to have Ben doing a lot of commentating. and obvoiusly do everything possible to encourage all of our friends from England to return to the '09 clash - at a loction yet to be determined.
