With the car rebuilt and Tekin Mini Rage installed and working nicely, I wanted to test the cars speed and see how it handled the Tekin system.  I took the Frog to work and gave it a quick blast around the office with the 5.4kv motor and 13t pinion, the slipper worked hard and the car was super quick – I certainly couldn’t apply full throttle.  I then took it to the carpark (parking lot for those of you in the USA) around the back of the offices.
Awesome is all I could say about the speed, the motor felt under geared with the 13t pinion (smallest metal one I had) but speed was still very good.


Rather than just change pinions, since this was just a quick test, I stuck in the 8kv motor and 15t pinion.   On the first few seconds of driving this I thought it was no faster than the 5.4 motor- until I realized the tyres were just spinning!
When I managed to control my throttle finger to set off under control (this is REALLY powerful) the top speed was nothing short of awesome, I’d guess similar to my B4 with a 9-10 turn in it or that's how it felt, it was wild.


Steering at high speed was pretty good, the car seemed quite stable.  Unfortunately the low speed handling was much like it had been on the Batley Buggy race track- very touchy.  Setting off in a straight line required finesse with the throttle and steering.  The power was amazing and could bring out the flaws in any car, but the cars poor steering was evident at much lower speeds / power even with the supplied motor.

I only spent a few minutes testing the Frog / Tekin brushless combo and didn’t even exhaust a pack of cells, but the tyres had gone from near new to having no spike left !   The concrete car park and insane power were way too much for the tyres, oops.
That will be a lesson to me, don’t run the Tekin powered car on concrete again!

"Cogging", or a slight hesitation of the brushless motor when setting off from a standing start, was almost non-existant on the 5.4kv and only slightly more detectable on the 8kv motor which is great.  The feel was like any brushed motor I've used apart from the power which is immense.  The 5.4kv motor is probably the way to go in the frog, the quicker motors are possibly too quick. 

If speed is your thing and you want to give the excellent TamTech chassis what it really deserves, then there can be no better solution. 



Conclusion:

The TamTech Gear Frog whether in standard form or “hopped up” is great fun.  The quality is superb with great attention to detail, the body is superbly finished and the inclusion of full ball races, slipper, ball diff etc is all very welcome.  The electrics are well matched to the car and are all independently upgradeable.  The car comes ready to go without any fiddling which is nice.


The drawbacks to the car were mainly the steering, it was tight to begin with, the design of it seems to make it very keen (more so on some surfaces than others)  and the servo saver seems to have too much slop.
The spring suspension is fun in certain situations with the kit motor, it makes the kit motor fun! But it really does handle poorly without oil shocks, and if you want to upgrade the speed at all, oil shocks need to be your first upgrade.  Likewise with running on any sort of rough ground, it can be quite frustrating as the car is simply hard to control.

For anything outside, I’d recommend a faster motor. Tamiya will have a faster “Sport Tuned” motor available soon, though I can’t recommend something I haven’t tested. If that’s not fast enough then something like the Tekin Mini Rage as tested here is the ultimate combination for the Frog and really made it come alive- Just make sure to buy plenty of tyres.

I'd highly recommend the TamTech Gear series of cars, they look to be a better size than the smaller 18th scale cars for running off road. But still small enough to drive in a confined area. I look forward to seeing what else Tamiya can come up with for us retro fans. A TamTech Rough Rider perchance ? :)
